Task 1:

The two maps depict the alterations made to an Australian beach in 1950 and now.

Overall, while the basic establishments like the beach position, the pavilion and the light house
are still unchanged, several other recreational facilities have been installed, together with the
expansion of the road.

In 1950, on entering the area, people would reach a car park at the end of the road. Today, that
car park is the same; however, a new smaller one has been built on the right side right next to the
entrance. After more than 50 years, the position of the dining tables has been maintained; they
still stand next to the pavilion, on the right side of the visitors driving into the region. The road
has been expanded, though, connecting the tourists with the newly established surf club and after
that, the light house, which has not been interfered since 1950. In the past, the pools on both sides
had the similar length of 25 meters; nevertheless, the pool on the left has been enlarged to the
double size. Next to it lie another surf club and the restaurant, which were not built until after
1950.

Task 2:

These days, some administrations have made it obligatory for every urban area to maintain open
space like parks or squares for the sake of their citizens. Albeit such constructions come with
some drawbacks, I do agree with the opinion that municipal public space is indispensable as it is
advantageous for the general populace.

On the one hand, open premises produce numerous benefits for city dwellers’ well-being. To
begin with, they act as a setting for urban people to directly connect after a long exhausting day at
work. People can easily make friends and communicate with others just by participating in
activities such as dog walking or jogging, which only happens in these space. As a result,
metropolitan’s level of pressure will be ameliorated, along with the improvement of their
mentality. Secondly, the existence of public space like parks is favorable to the cities’
environment and also the citizens’ physical health. With the exacerbated situation of pollutions,
trees have become increasingly significant to metropolis, as they can absorb carbon dioxide and
other toxins, filtering the air that people breathe. Therefore, city population can have better life
qualities, and prolonged longevity.
On the other hand, public establishments do have some downsides. First, they occupy quite a
large area of the cities, which are currently short of land as a consequence of urbanization. Had
the authoritarians not built parks and squares, they could have had constructed high-rise building
where thousands of people could have inhabited. Additionally, open space is not wholly
affordable for developing countries. It has been reported in many poor states that parks and
squares have severely degraded, and local governments do not have enough budget for
maintenance and reparation. Subsequently, those areas become deserted, and are a suitable
environment for the development of some infectious diseases spread by insects like mosquitoes.

However, even though open premises have some negative impacts, they are still worth
constructing because of the benefits that they create. Meanwhile, issues such as the lack of space
can be solved by better-planned site zoning, and failure to maintain the infrastructure can be
relieved by building small establishments instead of gigantic ones.

In conclusion, even when parks and squares are not completely beneficial, they are of upmost
importance to any cities and towns. Hence, governments should focus on their conservation in
order to improve the citizens’ lives.
