CSACAIV02 : IMPLEMENTING & MANAGING

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Assigment Acitivity 1 :
Research and show two Acts or Regulations that apply to a business and
give details of those Acts or Regulations. Explain how they apply and
what impact they have in your workplace.
If you are not currently employed , then you will need to choose a local
business as your case study.
 Environment Protection Act 1970 – Victoria
+) Established in 1970 then established The Environment
Protection Authority Victoria. EPA's role is to prevent and reduce
the harmful effects of pollution and waste on Victorians and their
environment. EPA sits within the portfolio of Energy, Environment
and Climate Change.
+) Established under the Environment Protection Act 1970, EPA is
the world's third oldest environmental regulatory agency. It was
established to address environmental problems across the state in a
systematic and integrated way, bringing together a range of
legislation and powers to be administered by a central authority.
+) Pollution is not specifically defined in the Act but, in suinmary,
pollution involves a change in the environment which makes air,
land or water any of the following:
* Noxious, poisonous or offensive to humans
* Harmful or potentially harmful to humans, animals or plants
* Detrimental to any beneficial use.
+) Beneficial uses are uses and values of the environment that
communities want to protect, such as human health and wellbeing,
local amenity and aesthetic enjoyment. Beneficial uses are
specified in State environment protection policies.
+) Any person who causes or permits air pollution (including
odour pollution), land pollution or water pollutioncommits an
offence. The 1970 Act imposes significant maximum penalties for
pollution offences. In certain circumstances if the pollution is
intentional, reckless or negligent the normal maximum penalty
may be increased and may result in a term of imprisonment.
+) EPA uses its powers, such as directions and notices, to control
and rectify pollution or to prevent it occurring. More information
on identifying and reporting pollution.

Royal Assent 25 July 2011)
+) Iclude 9 Part :
*Part 1—Introduction Collapse .

*Part 8—Protecting information
*Part 9—Miscellaneous
+) Product Stewardship (PS) schemes are one of several ways to
drive waste out of landfill and back into the productive economy.
They ‘encourage’ industry to fund the collection of, and recycling
of, their goods once they reach the end of their productive life.
Products that lends themselves to PS systems are easily
identifiable, have known distribution networks and involve an
experienced industry body.
The Commonwealth Product Stewardship Act 2011 sets up the
legal framework for product stewardship. It establishes three levels
of management: mandatory, co-regulatory (joint industry and
government delivery) and voluntary.
To date, there are no mandatory schemes under the Act (the only
mandatory product stewardship scheme in Australia is used by oil,
which is covered by its own legislation). There is one co-
regulatory scheme (TVs and computers) and two accredited
voluntary arrangements (MobileMuster and FluoroCycle). Several
other voluntary schemes exist but have not been accredited,
including schemes for tyres, agricultural chemical containers,
paint, PVC and newspapers.
+) Product stewardship needs the Commonwealth Government to
act, and to act deliberately. It cannot be delivered on a state-by-
state basis. We have a good National Waste Policy, we have a
Department of Environment and Energy that wants to deliver
more, and we have the legislative underpinnings of a solid system.
And we’ve seen it in play for five years. We know that it can do
better. We need to nudge the Commonwealth Parliament to drive it
harder and to be accountable for the outcomes.
Assignment Activity 2 :
Identify an environmental area of your current workplace where the
business would need to seek professional advice from a suitable
qualified and experienced environmental consultant . Find a suitable
consultant or business that could perform this consultancy and give their
details.
If you are not currently employed , then you will need to choose a local
business as your case study.
 Business type of Current workplace : Restaurant
 Environmental issues will be affected : Because of the business
type is restaurant,so there are three problems :
+) Kitchen Smoke
+) Water Pollution
+) Water Supply
 The requirement for choosing a consultant based on two issues in
the left :
+) Have experience in consulting and help the restaurant to control
the amount of water used.
+) Experienced in consulting and helping restaurant waste water
treatment.
+) There is good company certificate and achieve many

Why? “ Because it meets all the needs that the restaurant needs “
Information :
+) Name : Saigon Green Laboratory of Environmental and
Contruction Joint Stock Company .

+) Add: 83 Truong Vinh Ky, Tan Thanh Ward, Tan Phu District,
Ho Chi Minh City.
+) Review : - Odor treatment is the process of separation of
volatile compounds that cause unwanted odor from the air flow,
ensuring airflow before discharge into the environment.
- Modern processing technology, equipment are
imported from advanced countries in the world. Odor treatment
system is designed and manufactured by Green Sai Gon Company
with almost thorough treatment efficiency (about 95 - 98%).
Designed with many different capacities, specialized in each
industry and depending on customer requirements.
- There are many good reviews, which have helped
many factories handle the modern technology.

Assignment Activity 3 :
To complete this assignment , you will need to access information from
a business or your home .Speak to the management at your workplace
and seek access to details about your energy use .
Show the use of electricity used in your business for a one month period
and show what the source of this information . Include any calculations
you made to get to the use of the one month .
If you are not able to access this information in your workplace , then
use the information from your home and make the same calculations .
This will at least show that you are able to do the calculations and
understand the method .
-The total cost of the electricity for 90 days : $337.64
-1 Month : $337.64 ÷ 3 months = $112.546
and Electric used : 8.25 kWh × 30 days = 247.7 kWh/month
-1 Day : $112.546 ÷ 30 days = $3.75
-1 Hour : $3.75 ÷ 24 hours = $0.156
Assignment Activity 4 :
This is the same as activity 6 on the next page , but we want you to
include the results in the assignment as a form of assessment .
Choose at tap or water source at your business and check the flow rate in
litres per minute give the details of the experiment.
a) Put 2 buckets under 2 taps
b) Turn on the 2 taps and press the clock at the same time for 1
minute
c) Measure 2 taps
 Tap 1 : 6 liters /1 mins
 Tap 2 : 5.518 liters /1 mins
 Tap 1 and Tap 2 out from 1 source but tap 1 first flow so the tap 1
flows more strongly than tap 2 .
Assignment Activity 5 :
Research and find a local depot to recycle e-waste such as old
computers, TVs and printers in your local area. Is there a cost involved ?

recyclable waste.
*Procedure :
+) Hydrometallurgy : With this technique, electronic waste is
embedded in acids or organic solvents to convert metals into a
solution. The metal is then recovered through the chemical
process or through the electrical phase.
+) The main method used is to burn and use Hydrometallurgy to
recycle a few metal products.
+) Fire : The main equipment used in this method is the
incinerator – usually specially designed to ensure for 2
combustion phases. The process of operating the furnace is
controlled automatically. In this method, people are interested in
the withdrawal of ferrous metals, precious metals-mainly in
circuits, telephones (used as a conductor). Metals such as iron,
copper are burned to molten, while some precious metals such as
gold are not yet molten at that temperature. Ash is recorded from
that to revert to precious metals. Exhaust smoke can be
processed or recovered for heat. Slag from the incinerator can be
recycled again or placed into specific processing, such used in
brick production or cement.
