어야 문장을 만들 수 있다.
2. Be 동사가 쓰인 문장은 주어와 Be 동사 위치를 바꾸는 것으로 의문문을 만든
다. 그리고, 여기에 What, Where 등의 Question word를 더할 수 있다.

Grammar in Tips
1. 특정한 전치사와 자주 쓰이는 동사들은 하나의 표현처럼 익히자. 의문문에서
종종 이러한 전치사를 빼먹는 경우가 있다. 그리고 언제나 우리말의 '어떻게?'가
How가 되지는 않는다. 어떤 대상에 대한 전반적인 정보나 내용에 대해 물을 땐
"What ~ like?"의 형태로 묻는다.
2. 특정한 범위에 제한되지 않고 전반적인 범위를 놓고 물을 때엔 What, 특정한
범위 안에서 물을 때엔 Which를 쓴다. 다만, 사람에 대해서는 뒤에 따로 명사를
붙이지 않는 한 범위에 상관없이 Who를 쓴다.
3. 시간이 걸린다는 의미로는 동사 Take를 써서 표현한다.
4. Do you know~? Could you tell me~? 등에 질문이 들어가는 간접 의문문의 경
우, 동사의 Type에 따라 만들었던 질문의 형태를 다시 원래대로 돌려놓는다. 또
한 What, where 등이 없는 yes/no 답을 요구하는 질문은 if 로 연결하면 된다.

Basic Grammar in Use Lesson 21
UNIT 51 She said that… He told me that…
55
3. say 일까? , tell 일까?
Ex) Jenny가 나한테 뭐라고 그러더라. say를 쓴다.
=> '나한테'가 아닌, "내용"이 중요함
★ 말을 옮길 때 : 한 걸음 물러나기!!
①. 이미 지난 과거의 일이 되므로 동사를 -ed form 으로 바꿔준다.
②. 말을 한 사람은 이미 제3자가 되므로 he/she/they로 바꿔준다.
4. [S+V] 뒤에 (S+V)가 올 경우 -> that
Ex) He said that he would call me.
Ex) She said (that) she was enjoying.
S+V 생략가능 S+V
5. 문장이 길어지면 생략하는 것이 좋지만 일단 쉼을 위해 넣어도 된다.
6. tell / say
Ex1) He told you. (그가 너에게 말했다.)
-> Did he tell you? (그가 너에게 말했니?)
-> did에서 과거를 표현했으므로 tell (root)
-> What did he tell you? (그가 너에게 뭐라고 말했니?)
56
Ex2) He said something to you.
-> Did he say to you? => did에서 과거를 표현했으므로 say
-> What did he say to you? (그가 너한테 뭐라고 말하디?)
Ex3) He said that he had to leave early.
Exercise 51.1
남의 말 옮기기 : say
1. A man : I've lost my watch.
=> He said (that) he had lost his watch.
2. A woman : I'm very busy.
=> She said (that) she was very busy.
3. A woman : I can't go to the party.
=> She said she couldn't go to the party.
4. A man : I have to go out.
=> He said he had to go out.
5. A man : I'm learning Russian.
=> He said he was learning Russian.
6. A woman : I don't feel very well.
=> She said she didn't feel very well.
7. We will be home late.
=> They said they would be home late.
8. A man : I've just gotten back from vacation.
=> He said he had just gotten back from vacation.
9. A woman : I'm going to buy a new computer.
=> She said she was going to buy a new computer.
10. We don't have a key.
=> They said they didn't have a key.
57
say 와 tell
①. 표면적으로는 둘 다 '말하다'라는 의미를 갖지만 특히 'tell은 어떤 것
을 알려주거나(inform) 가르칠 (instruct) 때' 쓴다. 이런 의미로는 say
를 쓸 수 없다.
He said to me that it was my last chance.
→ He told me that it was my last chance.
He said to me 'Good morning.' ↔ He told me, 'Good morning.'(*)
'What's your problem?' I said. ↔ 'What's your problem?' I told her.(*)
②. tell 뒤에는 말을 듣는 대상(사람)이 와야 한다(목적어로 사람을 취함). 반
면에 say는 사람을 목적어로 취하지 않는다. 사람을 표시하려면 전치사to를 붙인
다 예외적으로 tell a lie, tell a story/joke, tell the truth 등에는 사람
을 목적어로 쓰지 않는다.
She told me that she would be late.
She told that she would be late.(*)
She said me that she would be late.(*)
She said to me that she would be late.
③. tell의 목적어로 a word, a name, a sentence, a phrase 등이 올 때는 tell
을 쓰지 못한다. say를 쓴다.
Alice told a meaningful word this morning.(*)
Alice said a meaningful word this morning.
④. tell은 목적보어에 to부정사를 취할 수 있지만 say는 목적보어를 취할 수 없
다.
I told the children to go away. I said the children to go away.(*)
⑤. say나 tell은 간접적으로 질문하는 문장을 이끌 수 없다.
Bill said whether I wanted to see a film.(*)
Bill told whether I wanted to see a film.(*)
Bill asked whether I wanted to see a film.
