China initiated its reforestation programme of “Grain for Green” in 1999 to mitigate

Forestry and Grassland Administration of China, from 2013 to 2018, China planted 338,000

The Malayan tapir is a large mammal. It has distinctive black and white stripes. The
Malayan tapir’s colouring is a camouflage to protect them from their enemies. It lives in
the jungles and forest regions of the southern and central parts of Sumatra (Indonesia),
Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar. The Malayan tapir has a stubby, vestigial tail

The Environment Club of Sekolah Menengah Taman Ikhlas organised a week-long recycling
campaign. The club got tips from SMK Kampung Ehsan and SMK Taman Rimba on how to conduct
the campaign. The campaign started on 1st April and ended on 8th April. The purpose of the
campaign was to instil environmental awareness among the students.

Starting from 15th March, the members of the club prepared for the campaign. Then on
Monday, 1st April, Anita Lim, the president of the Environment Club kicked off the campaign

Li Wen Liang was an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital. On 31 December

2019, Li was sitting in his room in the hospital, flipping through the patients’ reports. The

patients were the stall owners at Huanan Seafood Market. Li was shocked to see a high level
of similarity between the symptoms shown by the patients and SARS, the disease which led

“This situation is critical! I must let my friends know this shocking news!” Li thought to
himself. He whipped out his phone and typed a message – “Seven confirmed cases of SARS
have been reported to the hospital from Huanan Seafood Market. Please remind your family
members and friends to take protective measures!” Without hesitation, he hit the button and
sent the alarming message to everyone in a private WeChat group of his medical school
classmates.
Catching a whiff of danger, Li’s classmates immediately shared the information with
other medical staff. Within days, the screenshots of Li’s WeChat messages had gone viral
on Chinese online forums. Consequently, the police interrogated Li for the leaked information
online. After investigation, the police found that Li did not have enough evidence to back up
his claim. Therefore, they wrongly concluded that Li’s messages for his friends were not true.
As a punishment, they made Li sign a letter of admonition.
After that, Li returned to work in the hospital as usual. On 8 January 2020, a patient was
assigned to Li. That patient had a fever and cough. Coincidentally, he was a storekeeper at
Huanan Seafood Market. Seeing the symptoms, Li had a bad feeling about the what was lying
ahead. “Send him to Ward F for further observation,” said Li to a nurse. Li was frustrated that
he did not have enough evidence to convince everyone that the scary epidemic was about
to break out. All he could do was to wait for the other shoe to drop.
The inevitable tragedy finally happened. Li developed a fever and a cough. His condition
was so severe that he was admitted to the intensive care unit at Houhu Hospital immediately.
Around the same time, the court in Wuhan ruled that Li had been unfairly punished and Li was
relieved to hear the news. Unfortunately, Li’s condition became critical on 7 February 2020.
He had been having breathing difficulty since his infection and oxygen saturation in his blood
had dropped to 85%. Due to the sudden health worsening, Li was sent to the emergency room.
Despite the efforts by the hospital, Li succumbed to Coronavirus infection eventually. His
heartbeat stopped at 9:30 p.m. on the same day. Due to Li’s contribution in whistle-blowing,
he was hailed as the hero of China during the hard times of Coronavirus epidemic.

Beaches strewn with rubbish are an eyesore to many eyes. Therefore, Nature Hero
Langkawi, a non-governmental organisation, is set up to return the beaches in Langkawi to
its previous beautiful state. (1) So, last week, I contacted the person-in-charge
of the organisation through Facebook and joined them in their next clean-up on the weekend.
On Saturday morning, I reached Pantai Tanjung Rhu at 7 a.m. Upon reaching the
beach, I saw a group of yellow shirt-clad volunteers at the roadside. (2) They
had different jobs and were of different age groups. However, they came together to make a
difference in Langkawi. The clean-up started at 8 a.m. in the morning. (3) We
found many types of rubbish there such as empty cans, plastic bags, Styrofoam boxes and
shards of glass.
When we were collecting the rubbish, we told each other jokes and interesting stories
in our life. (4) After three hours, the clean-up had come to an end. We had
collected around 200 kg of trash! (5) Then, we put it in plastic bags and sent
them to the recycling centre. (6) I will definitely join the clean-up in future
again.

Recently, my friends and I decided to go turtle watching at Rantau Abang, Terengganu.

We waited patiently together with a guide at a deserted children’s playground for almost
an hour. (1) Around 10 p.m., our guide was walking towards us excitedly.

All of us felt very excited as it was our first ever turtle watching experience.
(3) . He said that we were lucky because although we came at the end of
September, we were still able to watch a turtle lay eggs.
We all made our way quietly in the the light of the waning moon above. (4)
Our guide suddenly stopped and pointed to a spot under a large tree. He asked us if we could
see something crawling near some rocks. Since our surroundings were pitch black, it was
difficult for my friends and I to see anything. Our guide said that we could not turn on the
lights while the mother turtle was digging the egg chamber. (5)
At around 10.59 p.m., the first egg was laid and our guide shone some light on the
egg chamber. (6) At the end of the process, there were 119 eggs. After laying
the eggs, the mother turtle went back into the ocean.
It was indeed the most wonderful experience. My friends and I wish to come again
another time.

HOW I STAY STRESS-FREE

When I first started secondary school, I felt stressed. (1) Although I still
enjoyed going to school, at times I felt overwhelmed and stressed.
One day, I decided to talk to the school counsellor about my high stress levels.
(2) She then told me in order to reduce my stress levels, I first had to eat
healthily. I must cut down on junk food and not skip my meals. I realised she was right.

My counsellor then advised me to get enough sleep. This means cutting down on
screen time and not taking caffeine close to bedtime. (4) I also liked to drink
coffee around six in the evening. I decided to cut down on late night television watching.
I also decided not to drink coffee in the evenings.
I was also told to exercise more. (5) The truth was I was just too lazy to
exercise. My counsellor said I had to schedule at least half an hour a day for exercise. Apart
from that, my counsellor said I had to spend some time hanging out with friends or doing
things unrelated to my studies such as a hobby. (6)
After meeting my counsellor, I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
I followed her tips and now I do not feel so stressed.
