Brief of Group Project Assignment 
Components and weights

We do away from writing a final report this time. Make a good 
presentation and submit the presentation file (e.g., ppt; mp4) only. 
 Group project presentation – 25% of the total marks of the 
module.
The Project 
 Study an economic question relevant to the module content.
o Not a thesis paper nor academic research.
• I don’t expect you to research “If supply of new HDB flats doubles, how 
much would prices of private housing increase?” here.
o The scope can be small.
• A lively question starting from an observation you experienced in life 
could work best.
• E.g., “Does Woodland has less consumption variety than in Orchard 
Road areas?” “Should a B‐school fresh grade of Universiti Malaya finds 
a job in KL or Penang?” “Is there some sort of segregation near 
Nanyang Primary School? How did it happen?.” Why are tomatoes in 
Singapore more expensive than strawberries in Santiago, Chile?” 
• Not just Yes or No. Need to explain using urban economics.
o Being a little casual is perfectly fine. 
• (Nowadays, people learn much from Informative YouTube Channels.)   
Project Workshops
 Two project workshops
o The students and lecturer “do research together”, although students need 
to do some preparation beforehand.
o Note: Workshop participation do account for class participation marks.
 The 1st project workshop (week 5 or 6)
o Purpose: Brainstorming ideas and explore potential topics.
o Outcome: Finalize a specific question that is relevant, interesting, and 
doable.
 The 2nd project workshop (week 7 or 8)
o Purpose: Review and discuss stuff prepared after the 1st workshop. Fine‐
tune the direction or question. 
o Outcome: Trim off less important information and be more focused on the 
important stuff in the rest of the work. 
Final Presentation

 Either in week 9 or 10 depending on your tutorial group.
o A presentation around 15 minute long plus some Q&A time
o More details will be announced.

 Upload the presentation file to LumiNUS RE2705 page at least a 
day before your presentation. 
o Include References at the end of the file.
o Name the file as “TG#_PG#_title”
• E.g., Suppose I am in tutorial group 3 and project group 2, then my file 
should be TG3_PG2_title
Manpower
 You need to form your group, but not now. Find your teammates within 
your tutorial group, since workshops and presentations are all 
conducted within your tutorial group. 
o Each tutorial group would have 4 or 5 project groups.
o Too many groups would undermine the quality of the group‐
presentation session and workshop discussion.
 I will inform the permissible group size after seeing each tutorial 
group’s student list. Then, you will list out your group members via a 
Google Doc document. Toward the end of the group formation exercise, 
I may have to use discretion to allocation a few students.
 In terms of assessment, the bar would be higher for groups with 
substantially more manpower.
o Be aware of the diminishing marginal return of labor. Asking special 
consideration for having more members is not always a good idea. 
Manpower
 Toward the end of the group formation exercise, I may have to use 
discretion to allocation a few students.
o Non‐RE students are encouraged to be more proactive and 
introduce yourself to RE students.
 In terms of assessment, the bar would be higher for groups with 
substantially more manpower.

consideration for having more members is not always a good idea.
