TREATMENT PLANT
Our 3-stage treatment makes sure that used water is
treated to very high standards to be re-used for many
different applications.

I. How We Bring Water to Life

A step-by-step process to the purification of water.

Preliminary Treatment
The purpose of pre-treatment is to protect the
operation of the treatment plant by removing from the
used water any constituents which may damage the
equipment or interfere with the treatment process:
large suspended or floating solids (pieces of wood,
cloth, paper, plastics, garbage, kitchen refuse, organic
matter), heavy inorganic solids (sand, gravel, metal,
glass), and excessive amounts of oils or greases.
Pre-treatment is achieved by screening used water
through a set of screens to remove constituents that
are up to 6mm thick. Once collected, the physical
matter is disposed of appropriately, with environmental
practices being implemented. The screened used water
then flows through grit removal units, which can
remove particles up to 0.2 mm in diameter.

Primary Treatment: Upflow
Anaerobic Sludge Blanket
The screened and de-gritted used water then flows
through the system to the primary treatment where
anaerobic biological reactions (without supply of oxygen)
take place.The incoming flow is divided through 8 Upflow
Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors, where the
influent flows upwards through sludge blankets which
fliter and treat the used water thanks to anaerobic
microorganisms. As a result, up to 75% of all organic
matter is removed. During this process, both sludge and
biogas are produced. The gas is extracted safely and
burned off. Excess sludge is removed from the UASB and
dewatered using high-powered centrifuges, collected
and disposed of.
Secondary Treatment:
Pre-aeration & Activated Sludge
The partially treated water then flows under gravity into
“pre-aeration” tanks where air is blown into the system
to remove hydrogen sulphide. It is extremely important
that hydrogen sulphide is treated and disposed of
effectively as it is toxic and can harm both our
employees and the environment. Therefore we have also
installed “odor control units” which collect the gas, treat
it biologically and keep it from causing harm.
The aerobic treatment utilizes a biological process
referred to as “activated sludge process”, where the
partially treated influent is further oxygenated through
fine oxygen diffusers placed at the bottom of 6 activated

sludge tanks. This supply of oxygen activates
microorganisms that efficiently further remove the
biological content present in the water.
The partially treated water is then transported to
one of 5 clarifiers which aim to separate the sludge
from it. To achieve this, a continually moving
scraper rotates around the clarifier, forcing the
suspended solids to settle from the water. Upon
being separated, the sludge is aggregated and
dewatered through a series of belt filters and
presses.
Tertiary Treatment: Deep Bed
Filters & Chlorination
The partially treated influent then flows to 10 Deep
Bed Filters (DBF) units which are of the gravity sand
filter type. The sand naturally traps solids and
bacteria between them, allowing only the filtered
water to trickle down. After this process, the
filtered water is finally sent to two chlorination
contact tanks for one final round of disinfection, to
achieve and exceed the required treated effluent
standards.
Management and Protection
To manage this complex process, we have a variety
of systems in place and focus on quality control in
every aspect. We have a dedicated team to monitor
the quality of the used water in the system with
laboratory analysis of the water being undertaken
on a daily basis.

In Ajman, we place a large emphasis on the importance of education.
Because of this, we host numerous educational tours at our treatment
plants for all school levels. By educating our future generations, we seek to
raise awareness of the importance of water consumption and the role
ASPCL plays in creating a prosperous future for all.
Volunteering and Bio-Refinery Activities
We host various volunteering events at our Wastewater Treatment Plant
(WWTP), where our driven staff and bird-watcher volunteers can come
together to clean up and preserve the wetlands for future generations to
enjoy. We believe that every effort taken by individuals will lead to a more
sustainable city for all.

Water-Saving Devices Installation
Fresh, clean water is a limited resource. With that in mind, we aim to
give back to our community and help them conserve water by
installing water-saving devices at 74 schools across Ajman as well as
all the mosques in the Emirate. These water-saving devices have
enabled these institutions to effectively save the amount of water
consumed on a daily basis, which leads to a brighter future for the city
of Ajman.
Through our efforts to give back to the community, we hope to inform
and educate Ajman about the environment and ASPCL’s actions to
create a cleaner and maintainable city. Open for all to participate; we
remain completely transparent about our processes, which is
exhibited at our open days and volunteering events.
