CONCEPT CHECK

• What is Conservation?

Conservation is simply defined as the sensible and careful management of our natural resources. It
encompasses all those actions taken toward the long-term preservation of cultural heritage. Natural resources
are the parts of the environment that are highly important to humans, whether they in one form or the other.
This is the reason why we should conserve them, since some are non-renewable. The conservation of natural
resources includes terracing farmland as to prevent erosion, applying crop rotation for soil fertility enhancement
and irrigation to increase crop yield.

• What is Preservation?

Preservation on the other hand, is the protection of natural resources and cultural property through
activities that minimize chemical and physical deterioration and damage and that prevent loss of informational
content. The primary goal of preservation is to protect the environment from the harmful effects of human
activities. In preservation, undisturbed areas are set aside and maintained in pristine state so that they are
protected from human activities that might alter their state.

• How does conservation differ from preservation?

Conservation and preservation are both processes that protect the environment, but the two concepts
are different. In simple terms, Conservation protects the environment through the responsible and efficient use
of natural resources, particularly non-renewable ones. Preservation on the other hand protects the environment
from harmful human activities for the purpose of using them in the future. A very good example would be
conserving a forest typically involves sustainable logging practices to minimize deforestation, while preservation
would involve setting aside part or even all of the forest from human development.
