THE BALINGAGA MASSACRE September 28, 1901

- At dawn, many women were dressed for the town fiesta,


started going toward the church, and another group carrying
bamboo tubes headed towards the town plaza and the
stockade ( bringing water to the prisoners)

- By 6:30, someone walked up to one of the sentries and took


his riffle without warning and the church bells rang soon after.
- 15 mins after the attack started, all but 5 of 74 men have been
wounded or killed. Of those wounded 12 could get on their
feet.

- A decision was made that the small group could not hold the
small town so they will try to escape by boat to the nearest
American Garrison in Basey.
- Of 26 survivors, 22 were wounded and 2 died in route.

- Capt. Bookmiller was staioned with his men at Basey, with his
55 men, they immediately returned to Balangiga at noon of
same day. They drove back to the insurgents without difficulty.
- Other dead bodies were buried by Capt. Bookmillerand
returned to Basey.
- Some 250 Filipinos has been killed in the massacre.
