PROBLEM 1.
(i) A powder is contained in a vessel to form a cylindrical plug 0.8
cm in diameter and 3 cm long. The powder density is 2.5 g cm−3 and
2.20 grams of powder was used to form the plug. The porosity inside
the plug of powder is (-):

a: 0.58 b: 0.42 c: 0.75 d: 0.25

(ii). Air was drawn through the plug at a rate of 6.6 cm3 per minute.
A mercury manometer was used to measure the pressure drop
during this process: a pressure drop of 60 mm Hg was recorded. The
specific gravity of mercury is 13.6, thus the pressure drop across the
plug was (Pa):

a: 80 b: 800 c: 8000 d: 80000

(iii). The superficial gas velocity in (ii) was (m s−1):

a: 0.0022 b: 3.65x10−5 c: 2.2x10−6 d: 0.00365

(iv). The viscosity of the air was 1.8x10−5 Pa s, using the Kozeny-

Carman equation, the specific surface area per unit volume of the
powder was (m-1):

a: 2310 b: 3.0x1011 c: 5.5x105 d: 1.2x106

(v). The Sauter mean diameter of the powder was (μm):

a: 2600 b: 22 c: 11 d: 5.0

(vi). The air density was 1.2 kg m−3, the Modified Reynolds Number
of the system was (-):

a: 0.10 b: 8.4x10−10 c: 4.6x10−4 d: 0.00021.

PROBLEM 2
Five litres of a 10% w/w slurry of chalk ( ρs of 2670 kg m−3) in
water (μ of 0.001 Pa s) was filtered under constant pressure on a filter
leaf of 0.0314 m2 area. The specific surface of the chalk is 3x106 m−1
and the cake can be assumed to have had a porosity of 50%.

i). The volume of solids in the slurry was (cm3):

a: 100 b: 500 c: 200 d: 250

ii). The volume of water retained in the filter cake was (cm3):

a: 400 b: 200 c: 100 d: 0

iii). The filtrate volume was (cm3):

a: 4600 b: 4750 c: 4500 d: 4800

iv). The mass of dry solids in the cake was (kg);

a: 0.533 b: 0.500 c: 1.335 d: 0.668

v). The dry mass of solids per unit volume of filtrate (i.e. the same as
‘c’) was (kg m−3):

a: 112 b: 100 c: 116 d: 2670

vi). Using the Kozeny-Carman equation, the permeability of the cake

was (m2):

a: 1.1x10−14 b: 9x1013 c: 3.3x10−8 d: 3x107

vii). The specific resistance of the cake was (m kg−1):

a: 8.3x10−18 b: 22500 c: 2.5x10−11 d: 6.7x1010

viii). The time taken to filter the suspension, if the medium resistance
can be neglected and the differential pressure forming the cake was
36 cm of mercury ( ρHg =13600 kg m−3), was (s):

a: 55 b: 998 c: 1572 d: 1747
