COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS AND PROGRAMMING 2 LABORATORY

Laboratory No. 2.1

Title: MICROSOFT EXCEL PROGRAMMING

I. Objective

i. Learn how to use computer programming for Construction Estimates.

ii. Acquire proficiency in algorithm development using a high-level programming
language.
iii. Use high level language and programming applications in solving civil engineering
problems.

II. Problems

Determine how many 10x20x40 CHB, bags of cement and sand are needed to finish the CHB
laying of the firewall shown. Use 12 mm Class "B" for mortar and 16 mm Class "B" for plaster
of 2 sides of the wall. Use two decimal places in all computed values and summate these
materials respectively to know the final quantity of materials intended for masonry works.
Round up to the nearest whole number for the number of bags of cement. Round up to the
nearest 0.50 increment for the volume of sand. Kindly follow these instructions as negligence
may lead to incorrect values.

III. Procedure

1. Create a new workbook and name this Laboratory 2 (Group #).

2. Input the necessary data in your 1st worksheet and name this Laboratory 2.1.
Choosing specific cells for input data by your user(s), return the corresponding
estimates for the required materials.
3. Restrict the user based on the available data on V. Tabulation of Data through Data
Validation. Suppose input data is not available on V. Tabulation of Data. In that case,
the programmer shall provide a stop dialogue box indicating that your program cannot
solve the problem with the other parameters aside from what is only available.
4. The user shall not input other data except the needed parameters. Formulas/Functions
discussed before this laboratory are enough to create a versatile program for this
case.
5. To check the program's versatility, the size of the CHB, class mixtures and thickness
of plaster may vary.

IV. Material(s)/Application

1. MS Excel

VI. Computation

(Step 1) Determine the Total Area of the CHB wall:

1 𝐴4 = (2)(3) = 𝟔
𝐴1 = (3 + 3.5)(5) = 𝟏𝟔. 𝟐𝟓 1
2
1 𝐴5 = (3 + 2.75)(5) = 𝟏𝟒. 𝟑𝟕𝟓
𝐴2 = (3.5 + 6)(5) = 𝟐𝟑. 𝟕𝟓 2
2
𝐴3 = (8)(6) = 𝟒𝟖
∴ 𝑻𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂 = 𝟏𝟎𝟖. 𝟑𝟖 𝒎𝟐
(Step 2) Determine the quantity of each material:

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬: 10 x 20 x 40 𝐂𝐇𝐁

CHB: 108.38 × 12.5 = 1354.75 ≈ 𝟏𝟑𝟓𝟓 𝒑𝒄𝒔

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐫: 12 mm Class "B"

Cement: 108.38 × 0.5220 = 𝟓𝟔. 𝟓𝟕 𝒃𝒂𝒈𝒔
Sand: 108.38 × 0.0435 = 𝟒. 𝟕𝟏 𝒎𝟑

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫: 16 mm Class "B" - 2 sides

Cement: (108.38 × 2) × 0.192 = 𝟒𝟏. 𝟔𝟐 𝒃𝒂𝒈𝒔
Sand:(108.38 × 2) × 0.016 = 𝟑. 𝟒𝟕 𝒎𝟑

(Step 3) Accomplish the Bill of Quantities:

CHB: 𝟏𝟑𝟓𝟓 𝒑𝒄𝒔 − 𝟏𝟎𝐱𝟐𝟎𝐱𝟒𝟎 𝐂𝐇𝐁

Cement: 56.57 + 41.62 = 98.19 ≈ 𝟗𝟗 𝒃𝒂𝒈𝒔
Sand: 4.71 + 3.47 = 8.18 ≈ 𝟖. 𝟓 𝒎𝟑

II. Problems

The commercial lot owner plans to fence the back of his lot using 15 x 20 x 40 cm concrete
hollow blocks. The fence is 11.5 meters long (column-to-column) and 3 meters high,
measured from the top of the footing provided with equally spaced 25 x 25 cm reinforced
concrete posts as shown from the figure and 20 x 20 cm wall footing. Determine the

respectively to know the final quantity of materials intended for masonry works. Round up to
the nearest whole number for the number of bags of cement. Round up to the nearest 0.50
increment for the volume of sand. Kindly follow these instructions as negligence may lead to
incorrect values.

III. Procedure

1. Continuing from Workbook: Laboratory 2 (Group #), create another worksheet and
name this Laboratory 2.2.
2. Using Table 2-2 and Table 2-4, find the corresponding factors intended for the size of
the CHB and class mixture of cement mortar and plaster using applicable
formula/functions.
3. Restrict the user based on the available data on V. Tabulation of Data through Data
Validation. Suppose input data is not available on V. Tabulation of Data. In that case,
