Mr.Walter Ribbon and also the doctors whom he met to sell the bone-density machines he
displayed emotions like happiness, excitement irrespective of his own emotions.
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence can be defined as a person’s ability to understand the meaning of his

didn’t allow his emotions to take control over the situation despite the intensity of the

PERSONALITY:
Personality is best depicted as a set of qualities that best describes an individual’s unique
character. Studying a person’s personality becomes important as it helps in predicting how he
will respond to certain situation. The two majorly used tools to analyse personality traits are
MBTI and BIG FIVE MODEL. In this case we will be using both to describe Chris
Gardner’s personality.
MBTI ANALYSIS:
This is a self-introspective tool used to predict how one perceives the world and makes
decisions. The different scales used to examine Chris Gardner’s character traits are:
EXTRAVERSION(E) - INTRAVERSION(I):
In the movie, it can be observed that Chris Gardner is an easy going and overtly friendly
personality who does not face difficulties in interacting with other. This can be mainly due to
the kind of job he works in- a salesperson who must interact with different clientele daily. He
is also seen to make small talks easily (the first scene where he interacts with a man parking
his car in front of Dean Witter. He is also very affable with his colleagues during the
internship and does not hesitate in assertively interacting with his superiors in the firm. The
personality traits of Chris like action-oriented, frequent social interactions, etc best describe
him as Extrovert (E).
SENSING(S) - INTUITION (N):
Chris Gardner’s personality was basically more towards intuitive as he focussed more on the
bigger picture than worrying about things happening in the present. Switching from a
salesman job to a stockbroker, he was open to trying things that are different from his usual
life. By learning to solve the Rubix Cube, he showed that he wants to learn new and
interesting things in life. Though faced with impending credit risks, he wanted to join the
internship because he was ambitious and trusted his instinct that he would be able to succeed
in life. While working up the fact sheet, though he was not moving up a faster pace than
others, he trusted his instincts , called the top person in the sheet, met him at a game and
through him got 31 contacts to the company, which helped him secure a job in the company.
His zeal to focus on new possibilities and attention to impressions and patterns rather than
facts makes him an Intuitive (N) personality.
THINKING (T) - FEELING (F):
Chris Gardner was passionate and dedicated person. Through all the ups and downs in his
life, he never gave up- he neither abandoned his son like his father did nor did he give up on
selling the bone density scanners when faced with obstacles. He even went behind the hipster
leaving the internship office to get back the machine he had to sell and did not give up on the
internship even though he faced discrimination by his superior. Throughout the movie, we
can see that he is a person strongly driven by emotions and extremely helpful- though he did
not have money, he gave $5 to his superior, Mr. Martin Frohm for his cab and also helps his
fellow colleague during the exam by reminding him about the essay section. All these
characteristics like warm, empathetic, decides with heart makes his personality more towards
Feeling (F).
JUDGING (J) – PERCEIVING (P):
In the movie, it can be seen that Chris is highly adaptable as he managed every situation
thrown at him – be it making to the interview on time after his arrest or getting adapted to the
tiring work life at the firm (giving up on drinking water, etc to save time). We can also
observe that he is disorganised – going behind the beggar in the middle of his work and
losing his shoes, running away from the cab man when he is unable to pay the fare and
turning up at the interview in disorganised clothes. He can be observed as a person who is
spontaneous in his decisions- like his decision to apply in the stock brokerage firm, his
decision to get in the car with Mr. Twistle to talk about the internship. The above qualities
and others like procrastination (postponing the payment of parking tickets, taxes, etc.) and
changing his career track midway make him more of a Perceiving (P) personality.
Thus, the ENFP personality type best describes Chris who is very amicable, dedicated,
emotional and creative.
