Duratec (Sigma) Engines – Timing Belt Noise

1. Description

Some 2010 to 2013 Figo, Fiesta, Ecosport & Focus vehicles equipped with a Duratec (Sigma) engine may
exhibit an abnormal bearing type or warble noise at the location of the Timing Belt Tensioner located to the
left of the Coolant Pump Assembly refer to Figures 1& 2 below. This noise is caused by the Timing Belt but
is often misdiagnosed resulting in unnecessary Coolant Pump replacements. Please follow the service
procedure below to diagnose and repair the Timing Belt noise on vehicles that meet the criteria specified
in Section 3 overleaf.

2. Service Procedure

Note: this procedure is to be performed on customer complaint vehicles only!

a) Ensure the vehicle meets the criteria outlined in Section 3 overleaf (Engine Plant Code identifier is
EFF12 and the Engine Build Date is before 3rd Dec 2013.
b) Park the vehicle in a quiet area.
c) Start the vehicle and raise the RPM to between 1000 and 1250.
d) Listen for any abnormal bearing type or warble noises coming from the vicinity of the Timing Belt
Tensioner Assembly – the noise is more predominant in the above specified RPM window.
e) Is an abnormal bearing type or warble noise from the vicinity of the Tensioner Assembly present?
a. Yes, proceed to step (f)
b. No, proceed to step (g)
f) Refer to the appropriate Work Shop Manual (WSM) Sections 301-01 and follow the procedures for
Timing Belt replacement.
g) For any other noise conditions, please continue with normal diagnostics. Minor water/coolant vapor
drops through the breather port of the Coolant Pump are normal and should not result in a Coolant
Pump replacement.
