PURSUASIVE TEXT
A persuasive text is any text where the main purpose is to present a point of
view and seeks to persuade a reader. A persuasive text can be an argument,
exposition, discussion, review or even an advertisement
IDENTIFY THE PERSUASIVE TEXT
Persuade: to cause someone to believe or to do something.
Persuasive texts
 State an opinion
 Give reasons to support their opinion
 Use strong adjectives
 Use words that trigger emotions
You should state the advantages of your opinion. If needed, tell the disadvantages of other’s
opinion. Compare yours to others, like what is the best pet? Cats or dogs? If you’re in the dog’s
side, state the advantages of having a dog instead of a cat.
1. State your position clearly and strongly. You have to be clear in stating which side you
want to be in and the reason you want your readers to believe in it as well. You should
know the topic that you are going to write about and your purpose for writing it.
2. Consider your Audience. Make sure that when you write your essay, you are thinking
about the variety of people who will be reading your essay. Make sure to know whether
your audience will agree, disagree or will be neutral on the idea you will present to them.
3. Research your topic. You cannot write a persuasive essay without a full grasp of the
idea that you are discussing. Remember that a persuasive essay must persuade the readers
through presenting facts, statistics, examples, quoting experts, and logical reasons instead
of merely speculations, opinions and hearsay. You can gather data through interviewing
people, browsing the net, reading books and articles related to your topic, and searching
for updated statistics that can strengthen your claim.
4. Structure your essay. Arrange your evidence in the most effective way. Decide on what
evidence to include in order to make your argument strong and credible. In arranging
your evidence, remember to consider your purpose, audience, and topic.
