Calibration of trapezoidal notch

Trapezoidal notch is a combination of a

rectangular notch and two triangular notches.
The discharge over such a notch will be the
sum of the discharge over the rectangular and
triangular notches.
THEORETICAL DISCHARGE OVER A TRAPEZOIDAL NOTCH:

Qth = 2/3 b 2 g [H] 3/2 + 8/15 2 g tan /2 [H] 5/2

Where,
Q th= Theoretical discharge
 = Angle of the trapezoidal notch = 45˚
H = Water head over crest.
Cd = Co-efficient of discharge
Procedure:
Start the pump and allow the water to flow
into the channel by opening the inlet valve.
Note the initial reading (at crest).
Note the final reading (head of water above
the crest)
Now measure the actual discharge using
downstream collection tank.

Assignment 3

1. A trapezoidal notch of 1.1 m wide at the top and 450 mm at

bottom has a crest height of 1 m. Find the discharge through
the notch if the elevation of the water surface above the
bottom of the channel is 1.25 m. The height of the notch is
300 mm. Take coefficient of discharge as 0.6. (5)
2. Name various valves that are attached to the laboratory
flume of Water Resources Engineering Lab at IIT (ISM)
Dhanbad and write their functions. (5)
