Leak Testing Of Sealed Sources

Permission for procurement of nucleonic gauge is given after ensuring compliance of

the radiation source, equipment and facility to the prescribed standards. The sealed source
should comply with acceptance standards prescribed in ISO 2919 or equivalent national
standards.
Once the gauge is installed, it is essential that, a regular test for leakage of radioactive
material is made through out the working life or during use of gauging device. This is to
ensure that encapsulation is intact.

Procedure
The test involves a wipe of the source and a subsequent assessment of radioactivity
on the wipe. Whenever it is not possible to have access to the source, it is recommended
that wipe be taken from the accessible surface. At the time of taking of a swipe care should
be taken not to damage the thin covering of source (e.g. mylar). The tests should be taken
once a year and an additional test should be undertaken, if the gauge is involved in any
incident that would have impaired the integrity of containment.

Measurement and Evaluation

A wet swipe of the accessible surface should be taken. The swipe could be a tissue
paper moistened in ethanol or water. An end window type GM counter is recommended for
measurement of beta source, and an alpha contamination monitor for alpha emitting
sources. Counting geometry is a very important parameter to be considered Same
geometrical position should be used for both calibration source as well as the sample.
Calibration of the detector/monitor should be done using a Standard reference source
for alpha/beta sources. Calibration should be done for respective energy of the source. The
count-rate measured using contamination monitor should be converted to radioactivity in the
following manner:
The counts obtained from standard reference source should be converted for unit

activity, i.e., counts/Bq (C1). The swipe should also be counted in the same geometry and
the counts obtained is noted as (C2). The gross activity in the swipe would be C2/C1, in Bq.
The gross activity should not exceed 185 Bq. It is preferable to count the standard as well
as samples for at least 10 minutes.
All these measurements should be recorded as per the enclosed format and sent to
Head, RSD, AERB, Niyamak Bhawan, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai – 400 094 by January 31
every year along with status report.
