COMMON ASSESSMENT TASK

DATE STUDENT NAME: HOME GROUP:

TASK TITLE What is the effect of various materials on heat loss?
LEARNING INTENTION To
- independently design and improve appropriate methods of investigation
- explain the control and accurate measurement of variables and systematic
collection of data
- Create a scientific report to display the results
SUCCESS CRITERIA I can
- independently design and improve appropriate methods of investigation
- explain the control and accurate measurement of variables and systematic
collection of data
- Create a scientific report to display the results
CONDITIONS Students are able to use a laptop in all lessons of the CAT
Each student must present an individual scientific report at the end of the three lessons but
are able to type up and print off the information.
TASK OUTLINE Students must design and conduct an experiment that measures the effect of various
materials on heat loss to a 37°C can of water. The 37°C is meant to simulate the human
body temperature. Students will then present their findings as a scientific poster.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY, Officer Secondary College is committed to upholding high standards of academic
PLAGIARISM AND integrity. As such, students who plagiarise or collude will be required to attend a meeting
COLLUSION with the Academic Panel. Details of the consequences of cheating (including plagiarism
and collusion) are found in the College handbook.
Plagiarism occurs when someone takes and uses another person’s work and attempting to
pass them off as your own by failing to appropriate acknowledge the creator. This includes
material sourced from the internet, staff, students, books, and any other works.
Collusion means collaborating with others on assessable work (written, oral or practical)
without permission. This can occur when you present group work as your own.
DECLARATION: By signing below, you are agreeing that all work is your own and that you have
AUTHENTICATION OF appropriately referenced any research (either in text, or in a bibliography).
WORK Students must sign the declaration in order for their work to be assessed.

Year 9 Term 3 Science CAT - Physics

Introduction:
COMMON ASSESSMENT TASK
The regular human body temperature is 37°C. If the human body falls far below this,
hypothermia and other serious medical issues can arise. Therefore, it is important to
know which materials can conserve heat the best when travelling in cold conditions.
In this investigation, we will investigate different insulators (newspapers, cotton wool,
foil, foam) to identify which material would make the best cold weather jacket. You
will choose two different materials and have a controlled group (plain can) to test the
heat loss of.
Present your experiment and findings as a scientific report including all the elements
listed below.

Checklist:
First lesson:

 Title (written as a question)

 Hypothesis
 Variables (independent,
dependent, control)
 Materials

Second lesson:
 Results (include a table and graph can be drawn or use excel)
 Discussion (must answer all questions, use TEEL)

Outline:
Lesson 1 - Planning the experiment
Outline the question you will be answering, identify variables, hypothesis and aim.
Begin researching into what jackets for cold/freezing conditions are made out of.

Lesson 2 – Conducting the experiment

Put the results you receive into your results table. If there is time, repeat the
experiment. Make any notes on limitations, errors or potential improvements.

Discussion Questions:
1. Highlight the parts in your method where you controlled the variables. How do these
parts make sure it is a fair test? Explain why a fair test important?
2. Discuss your results using key values, explain the relationships between variables
making links to thermodynamic principles and identify outliers in your data.
3. What limitations and experimental errors did you encounter in the experiment?
Using examples, discuss how these may have affected your results.
4. Suggest how your results could help a company wanting to design a new jacket that
works as a good insulator in cold conditions. What else may they want to consider?
5. Discuss how your method could be improved in the future and how we could extend
this experiment.

Extension:
In this experiment we had a control group. Explain what a control group is and why it is
important to have one in an experiment.

Conclusion:
Discuss the following:
- Was your aim achieved?
- Was your hypothesis supported?
- What can you conclude from this experiment?
- What are your suggestions for future experiments?
