Technology has changed the way we live, and with its advancement, it is almost

impossible to turn away from it. Besides the benefits we get from technology such as enhanced

communication, increased productivity and ease of access to information, it has also negatively

affected the society. The negative effects of technology are social isolation and job insecurity.

As society becomes more engaged in digital technology, people are slowly withdrawing

from interacting with others. Katherine Hobson (2017) claims that people who use social media

for more than two hours a day have twice the odds of being socially isolated compared to those

who use social media for half an hour per day. Apart from social media networks, people spend

so much time using technological devices such as smartphones and watching television that they

are no longer interested in doing other activities, as Muhammad Adil (2021) puts it. The reduced

interaction with people has resulted in social isolation, diluting the benefits of technology.

The work environment today has machines instead of humans doing most of the work,

leading to job insecurity. Melissa Llarena (2017) mentioned that the workplace efficiency has

grown exponentially due to technological advances which enable you to do things at the click of

a button, making human candidates no longer qualified for jobs. Although technology has made

things easier in the workplace, rendering human labor obsolete is negatively impacting those

who depend on their work to survive.

In summary, it is true that social isolation and job insecurity are some of the negative

effects associated with technology. The disadvantages of technology need to be considered to

judge how much we should allow technology to infiltrate our lives. Therefore, technology has

brought dire negative consequences in our lives.
