COVID – 19 vs. Influenza
Influenza (the flu) and COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus that's
led to the current pandemic, are both infectious respiratory illnesses. Although the
symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu can look similar, the two illnesses are caused by
different viruses.
Both cause fever, cough, body aches and fatigue; sometimes vomiting and
diarrhea. Can also result in pneumonia. Can be spread from person to person
through droplets in the air from an infected person coughing, sneezing or talking.
Both can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms
appear. Severe cases may require hospitalization and support such as mechanical
ventilation.
COVID-19: Caused by one virus, the novel 2019 coronavirus, now called
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. No vaccine is available at this time,
though development and testing is in progress. There have been approximately
494,841 deaths reported worldwide as June 2020.
Flu: Caused by any of several different types and strains of influenza viruses.
A vaccine is available and effective to prevent some of the most dangerous types or
to reduce the severity of the flu. The World Health Organization estimates
that 290,000 to 650,000 people die of flu-related causes every year worldwide

Textual aids – refers to written texts, prints and some other way of writing for an
important word, graphs, or even pictures that provide support and facilitate
understanding of texts. These aids are, most of the time, graphical outlines or
images that gives a general idea of a certain topic.
It helps students understand and comprehend any story, subject, or topic.
This will make it easy for students to memorize, remember, and learn important
words more quickly and easily.
Types of graphs
Line Graph – A common type of chart which displays information as a series
of data points connected by straight line segments to show trends
Bar Graph – A common type of chart which presents data with rectangular
bars that differ in their sizes. It is usually scaled so all the data could fit on the
chart.
Pie Graph – A circular chart which is divided into slices or portions to illustrate
proportion.
Tree Diagram- is a chart that begins with one central item and then branches into
more and keeps branching until the line of inquiry begun with the central item is
exhausted. The tree diagram, with its branching steps, motivates you to move from
the general to the specific in a systematic way.

COVID – 19
Covid -19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
It is now a pandemic affecting many countries globally. It is caused by a virus, not by
bacteria.
The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets
generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets are
too heavy to hang in the air, and quickly fall on floors or surfaces.
Among the positive cases so far, 1,803 (or 31%) are senior citizens, or at
least 60 years old. The elderly are at higher risk for severe illness due to COVID-19,
the disease caused by the coronavirus. Among the 387 deaths as of April 17, a total
of 260 are 60 years old and above, 69 are in their 50s, 36 are in their 40s, 13 in their
30s, and 9 are below 30, including the youngest death at less than 1 year old.
The best way to prevent the virus from spreading is by avoiding close contact
with people with COVID-19 and washing the hands regularly. When soap is not
available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching the face
before washing the hands. Keep surrounding surfaces as clean as possible and
avoid sharing household items. For those with mild symptoms, call a doctor over the
phone for medical advice. Stay informed with live updates on the current COVID-19
outbreak. (source Department of Health, June 23, 2020)
