BSN1-1 Health Education

Emily is a nursing staff member on a medical-surgical area. She notices that there has
been focused attention on one specific patient who is now receiving comfort care
measures. The patient does not appear in any distress or pain. The family members,
however, have been difficult to manage and have made constant demands for the
patient to received doses of medication to be sure their loved ones does not suffer.
Laura witnesses a staff nurse, who is assigned to the comfort care of the patient tell
another nurse that she is going to give a "nurse's dose of morphine because she is tired
of the family's criticism of the care she is giving.

1. What plausible actions should Laura take at this point?

- On my own opinion, Laura should talk to the family about her concern or at least she
would try to explain what kind of care the patient should have and explain that there is
nothing to worry about the health status of the patient since the other nurse staff which
is Emily noticed that the patient does not have any distress or pain.

2. Which legal and ethical reason could Laura rely on to justify the actions she takes

- It is unethical when she still gives a dose of morphine into the patient, we all know that
morphine is given in an intense level of pain then why she would do that? The patient
might have another complication if she insists to do it, and the family will be more
suspicious about the care that the nurses is giving.

3. Which of Laura's actions seem the most justified from a moral and ethical
standpoint?

- For me there is nothing moral in Laura’s action. Rather than make the family satisfied
on demands of the patient she losses her patience and decided easily without thinking
what will happened next. As a nurse we get along with different people and we should
be professional in every situation that we in, even the circumstances is not good. If the
morphine is given to the patient without any prescription she might kill the patient and
we all know that it is unethical.
