UNIT 7: Care of the Injured Child
(8 hours)

Let’s Start!
It is not uncommon for you to encounter pediatric clients who are subjected to trauma or injuries caused by
certain types of accidents in the community. Some accidents may present mild effect to the child, but some
may cause fatal complications. In most instances injuries could be acquired in an unintentional way. They occur
because of the child’s inability to distinguish safe situations from dangerous ones and may be a result that
parents overestimate the child’s ability.

But for some instance, injuries (physical in nature) results that from an abuse. As defined by Pilitteri, abuse is
the “willful injury by one person of another”. As future frontliners, it is not enough that we become
knowledgeable in managing injuries and helping parents how to prevent injuries in children, but we must also
be able to distinguish between signs of an unintentional injury from that of child abuse.

For this week, we will look into common unintentional injuries that you will most likely encounter among the
pediatric clients in your own community and child abuse – its signs and how to handle situations like this in the
community.

Let us start this unit by doing the following:

Read:
Learning materials on Unit 7: Care of the Injured Child or you may opt to read the following book chapters:
- Chapter 52 Nursing Care of a Family when the Child has Unintentional Injury (6 th Ed.), Maternal & Child
Health Nursing: Care of the Childbearing & Childrearing Family. pp 1543 to 1576
- Chapter 55 Nursing Care of a Family in Crisis: Abuse and Violence in the Family (6 th Ed.), Maternal &
Child Health Nursing: Care of the Childbearing & Childrearing Family. pp 1636to 1653.

Watch:
With your mobile phones or laptops, try looking for the following videos. They may be of great help in
reviewing and understanding certain concepts from the reading materials or book chapters that you have read.

Take a short break and breath, for you are now ready to do the activity for this unit. You will work on your
assignment for this week your Case Study 7A and 7B. These case studies focus on the topics presented above.

Think:
Remember the concepts, from what you have read and from the videos you have watched above and work on
your activity for this learning unit.
Activity #7: Individual Work (Case Study 7A and 7B: Nursing Care of the Injured Child) [4 hours]

Task:
You will work on a case study adapted from Adelle Pillitteri’s Maternal & Child Health Nursing: Care of the
Childbearing and Childrearing Family book. It will focus on the concepts presented on this unit. Please see
attached file of this case study.
