DESIGN

4.1 Plastic piping shall not be used in above-ground flammable materials or combustible
liquid.

R2 # 4.2 Above ground plastic piping subject to potential physical damage shall be encased in
steel pipe. Aboveground plastic pipe subject to potential sunlight damage shall be
painted, insulated, or otherwise protected from the harmful effects of the sun. Alternate
methods of protection shall be approved by ESSO.

4.3 Pipe lengths shall not exceed 3 m (10 ft.) for PTFE, and 6 m (20 ft.) for other plastic

4.4 Maximum allowable deflection of thermoplastic and RTRP pipe shall not exceed 5%,
taking into account applicable live and dead loads.

# 4.5 Proposals to use threaded joint thermoplastic pipe or RTRP pipe shall be submitted to
ESSO for approval. Mechanical joints which incorporate O-ring seals are acceptable for
RTRP piping.

R2 4.6 Mitered fittings in PE piping may be rated for only 60% of the design stress rating of the
pipe used for the fitting.

4.7 The required thickness of straight sections of non-metallic pipe under internal pressure
shall be determined by the equation for non-metallic piping in ASME B31.3.

4.8 To determine the external design pressure for plastic pipe installed underground, under
water or in other situations which cause external pressure, a safety factor of four must
be applied to the critical buckling pressure considering all imposed loads.

R2 4.9 When non-metallic pipe is used in vacuum service, the pressure design thickness, t,
must be determined in accordance with ASME B31.3, considering any applicable
dynamic effects such as vibrations, fatigue, cyclic operations, etc.

4.10 Plastic-lined piping shall have flanged joints. Joint design shall be per the following:

a. In non-flammable or non-combustible service, the liner shall be moulded or

shaped (lapped over the flange faces) to provide the gasket for the joint.

PLASTIC AND PLASTIC-LINED
PIPING Page 7 of 10

SPECIFICATION Rev. 2 DEC 2000

b. In flammable materials, combustible liquid or hazardous liquid service, the

flanged joint shall be designed to prevent leakage under exposure to heat
sufficient to destroy or melt the lining material. Vented piping shall not be used.

INSTALLATION

7.1 Bolt torque values to prevent liner damage shall be provided by the pipe vendor. Bolts
shall be tightened with a suitable torque wrench to insure these torque values are not
exceeded.

R2 7.2 Plastic spacers are permitted between plastic-lined pipe and other types of flanged
equipment in non-flammable or non-combustible service. Spacers larger than 13 mm
(1/2 in.) shall be armoured.

manufacturer's recommended procedure, except that joint strength shall be equal to the
longitudinal strength of the pipe when tested per ASTM D2105.

7.5 Bell and spigot joints using elastomeric seals are acceptable for underground RTRP
pipe, provided allowance is made for thermal expansion and contraction to avoid pullout
in service.

INSPECTION AND TESTING

defects and shall be repaired or replaced.

8.2 For solvent or adhesive joined piping, protrusion of dried cement or adhesive exceeding
25% of the wall thickness shall be removed.

8.3 For heat fusion joined piping, protrusion of fused filler material or base material
exceeding 25% of the wall thickness shall be removed.

8.4 Inspection of thermoplastic-lined pipe and fittings shall be per the applicable ASTM
Specification in the Vendor's shop. Except where option of hydrostatic or electrostatic
testing is permitted, both tests are required.
