SPECIFICATION Rev. 2 OCT 2000

SCOPE

1.1 This specification covers mandatory requirements governing the application of motors.

R2 1.2 An asterisk (*) indicates that additional information is provided by Purchaser/ESSO in an

addendum to this specification.

R2 1.3 A pound sign (#) indicates that Purchaser/ESSO review/approval is required before
design is finalized.

DEFINITIONS

R2 2.1 Acceptable and Preferred Practices - where this specification lists more than one type of
equipment or method as acceptable or preferred, the contractor shall make the selection
based on optimum cost benefits. Optimum cost benefits may be achieved by reducing
maintenance and operative expense through initial added investment. Economic basis
for calculating optimum cost benefits will be agreed to by Purchaser/ESSO.

2.2 The definitions in ECS 16-9-1 shall also apply to this specification.

SUMMARY OF ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

R2 3.1 Applicable standards of manufacture and testing for motors are given in ECS 16-9-1.

3.2 The equipment and materials used shall be all new and conform to the latest revision of
ECS 16-9-1.

SELECTION

R2 # 4.1 Squirrel-cage induction motors are preferred for all applications. Synchronous or other
type induction motors are acceptable when their characteristics are more appropriate for
an application, but their use must be approved by Purchaser. All motors shall be
approved and labelled in accordance with applicable IEC Standards. Motors for use in
IEC Zone 1 and 2 shall be labelled and approved for the zone and shall be suitable for
all atmospheres in the particular group.

4.2 If synchronous motors are used, motors shall have brushless excitation systems with
rotating exciters.

R2 * 4.3 Table 1 lists the Enclosure Selection Requirements. Special project requirements will be
specified by Purchaser/ESSO.

R1 4.4 Motor enclosure selection criteria on this project are as follows:

a. All motors used in IEC Zone 1 shall be the IEC equivalent of the API explosion
proof.

PRODUCTION CHAD INC.
ECS 16-7-1
MOTOR APPLICATION

SPECIFICATION Rev. 2 OCT 2000

b. All motors used in IEC Zone 2 shall be the IEC equivalent of the API totally
enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC).

c. All motors used in non-hazardous areas of a process facility shall be the IEC
equivalent of the API TEFC or better.

d. All motors used in non-process related facilities will have suitable enclosures as
per IEC.

e. All motors requiring filters in a process facility shall have re-usable filters,
suitable for adequate protection of the motor in the dusty environment.

R2 # 4.5 Modifications to Table 1 shall be made, with Purchaser's approval, where special
conditions make this necessary. For example:

a. Filters may be required for drip-proof or weather protected motors in locations

having large quantities of dirt, sand or other solid particles in the air.

b. Totally-enclosed fan-cooled or totally-enclosed water-air-cooled motors may be

required when filters cannot provide effective separation because of small size
and quantity of solid particles in the air.

4.6 Transient rotor temperature shall be checked for non-zone 1 motors driving fans and
other high-inertia loads in Zone 2 locations. Calculated rotor temperature during a
normal start from design operating temperature must not exceed 80% of the
"autoignition" temperature in ºC of the gas or vapour involved.

4.7 Transient rotor over-temperature during locked-rotor or repeated-start conditions is

classed as an abnormal occurrence. Special protection shall not be provided against
this condition. Specifically, specially designed motors such as "increased safety" types
and associated fast over-current relays shall not be used.

4.8 If the need for filters is questionable, motors shall have provisions for future installation
of filters. Provisions shall permit filters to be installed readily in ventilating openings or
to substitute new ventilating opening covers having filter frames attached. The motor
ventilating system shall be designed for operation with filters.

4.9 3-phase motors shall be used in all critical services, such as process units or boiler
plants, 0.37 kW and larger.

SPECIFICATION Rev. 2 OCT 2000

4.10 Horizontal motors shall not normally be used in a vertical application. If used in a
vertical application they shall be of a design which ensures proper lubrication of top and
bottom bearings. For outdoor locations such as air coolers, motors will have drip covers
installed above them and drain holes in the lower end bell.

R2 # 4.11 Vertical motors shall be of the solid-shaft type. Hollow-shaft vertical motors may be
proposed for Purchaser's approval when their characteristics are more appropriate for
an application. If hollow-shaft motors are used they shall be equipped with bolted
couplings; screwed joints are not acceptable.

* 4.12 Grease fittings shall be specified on motors for use in a plant where re-greasing in
service is practiced.

* 4.13 To ensure that motors 1100 kW and smaller have suitable performance characteristics
2 2
for starting and reaccelerating high inertia Wk (kgm ) loads, such as fans and
centrifugal or axial compressors, the following information shall be supplied to the motor
vendor:

a. Power system characteristics.

b. Driven equipment data.

c. Starting and reaccelerating conditions.

R2 * 4.14 Operating voltages for 60 Hz motors shall be as follows, unless specified on the motor
data sheet:

a. 120/208 Volts, 1 phase, below 0.37 kW

b. 480 Volts, 3 phase, between 0.37 kW and 150 kW

c. 6600 Volts, 3 phase, between 151 kW and above

DESIGN

5.1 When resistance temperature detectors are provided in the stator winding, one of the
detectors shall be connected to a temperature indicator-controller with high alarm
contacts as follows:

a. The alarm contact shall have an adjustable set point.

b. Indicator shall be capable of reading at least 20ºC above controller set point.

c. Two resistors shall be provided, preferably mounted in the indicator, so as to test

the alarm operation and the calibration of the indicator.

5.2 RTDs shall be 100 ohm platinum, three-wire, international standard.

5.3 Thermocouples shall be Chromel-Alumel (Type K).

5.4 Ventilating air for totally-enclosed, pipe-ventilated and forced-ventilated motors and the
IEC equivalents, shall be drawn from a clean, non-hazardous air source. Air shall be
filtered if necessary. Filters shall be of the reusable, non-clogging panel type having
corrosion-resisting metal screen media. Filter frames shall hold filter panels securely in
place, but panels shall be easily removable for cleaning.
5.5 Blower motors for totally-enclosed forced-ventilated motors and the IEC equivalents
shall be supplied via individual feeders, connected to separate power sources if
possible. Blower motor starters shall have time-delay, under-voltage release.
5.6 Control of totally-enclosed, forced-ventilated motors and the IEC equivalents shall be
arranged to prevent starting of the main motor unless one of the blowers is operating.
Control stations for blower motors shall be located adjacent to the control station for the
main motor. Each blower control station shall have a pilot light which shall indicate
when the blower motor is energized.
5.7 Double tube coolers are required for totally-enclosed, water-air cooled motors and the
IEC equivalents having the coolers mounted within the motor enclosure. Annular
spaces between tube walls shall be drained to an inspection point outside the motors.
5.8 An enclosed float switch and collecting pan shall be provided, mounted externally on the
motor housing to sense water draining from the tube annulus and to operate a water
leakage alarm.

R2 # 5.9 Single tube coolers may be used for totally-enclosed, water-air cooled motors and the
IEC equivalents if the coolers are mounted below the motor in a design, approved by
Purchaser/ESSO, which provides the following:
a. Baffling against leaks impinging directly on windings.
b. Vertical sections in paths from cooler to fan inlets with design air velocity under
200 meters/minute.
c. Indication of water leaks.

d. Access to cooler for maintenance and its removal without moving the motor.

e. Running with once-through ventilation if the cooler is out of service (not

applicable for pressurized design).

5.10 High and low flow devices shall be provided in the cooling water circuit of totally-
enclosed, water-air-cooled or IEC equivalent motors. The high flow device shall operate
an alarm and the low flow device shall operate an alarm immediately and then trip the
motor after a time delay through a hand reset lockout relay.
