1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This Specification, together with the requisition data sheets and all attachments thereto defines the
minimum requirements for Low Voltage Induction Motors, 149 kW and below. The Supplier's base
proposal shall be in accordance with this Specification.

1.2 Alternative Designs

The Supplier may offer alternative designs, provided that specific detailed exceptions to this
Specification are submitted.

1.3 Conflicting Requirements

1.3.1 In case of conflict between the various documents, the order of precedence is as follows:

1. Purchase Order
2. Requisition
3. Data sheets
4. This Specification
5. Project Specification(s)
6. Referenced Industry Standards

1.3.2 All conflicting requirements shall be referred to the Purchaser in writing. The Purchaser will
issue confirming documentation, if needed for clarification.

1.4 Definition of Terms

1.4.1 The English language shall be used for all drawings, documentation, and communication.
Certain documents as defined in SDR-1MJMLMU shall be prepared in English and French
languages.

1.4.2 All Engineering units shall be Metric.

1.5 Project Specifications, Codes and Industry Standards

The documents referred to herein shall be as follows:

Note: If there are differing requirements between listed Specifications and local or national
regulations, the manufacturer shall bring this to the attention of the Purchaser and state
the basis on which he will quote.

2. BASIC DESIGN

2.1 General

2.1.1 For details on site conditions, refer to the Project Design Data Sheet.

2.1.2 The electrical power supplied for the motors shall be 460 volts, 3-phase, 60 Hz.

2.1.3 The equipment (including auxiliaries) covered by this Specification shall be designed and
constructed for a minimum service life of 30 years.

2.1.4 Electrical components and electrical installations shall be suitable and certified for the
hazardous area classification specified on the relevant data sheets.

2.1.5 The Purchaser will specify the installation location and the environmental conditions in which
the equipment must operate. The package and its auxiliaries shall be suitable for operation under
these specified conditions.

2.1.6 All low voltage motors shall conform to the requirements of the IEC Specifications listed in
Paragraph 1.5.2 unless otherwise specified on the data sheets. All low voltage motors shall be
provided as squirrel cage induction, unless otherwise specified on the relevant data sheets or by the
driven equipment manufacturer.

2.1.7 Motors shall be of such design and construction that rotor arcing will not occur during start-up
and normal operation.

2.1.8 Rotation of all motors shall be in accordance with the driven equipment. Fans shall be
designed accordingly.

R4 2.1.9 All motors shall be designed for continuous severe duty and chemical service, and designed
for storage, installation, and operation (including standby service) in a hot, humid sea coast climate
(outdoors or indoors).

2.1.10 For motors located in areas classified as hazardous, external surface temperatures shall be
in accordance with the temperature limit identification number and the gas explosion group
specified on the data sheets.

2.1.11 The noise level of all motors shall not exceed 85 dBA at a distance of one (1) meter.

2.1.12 The motor insulation shall be sized such that when operating at the rated power of the driven
equipment, the winding temperature rise does not exceed 80ºC above an ambient temperature of
50ºC, by resistance.

2.1.13 The vibration limits for all low voltage motors shall be in accordance with IEC 60034, Part 14,
latest edition.

2.2 Mounting

2.2.1 The mounting configuration of all horizontal motors shall be in accordance with IEC 60034
mounting code IM B3, unless otherwise specified on the relevant data sheets. If proposed
equipment requires special mounting other than IM B3, the Supplier must state this deviation in the
proposal and provide justification.

2.2.2 The mounting configuration of all vertical motors shall be in accordance with IEC 60034
mounting code IM V1, unless otherwise specified on the relevant data sheets. If proposed
equipment requires special mounting other than IM V1, the Supplier must state this deviation in the
proposal and provide justification.

2.3 Weather Protection / Enclosures

2.3.1 The degree of protection for all motors and terminal boxes shall be sufficient to provide
protection against harmful dust deposits and protection against water projected from a nozzle. The
IEC 60034 enclosure protection code shall be applied to all motors and terminal boxes as specified
on the relevant data sheets.

2.3.2 All vertical motors installed outdoors shall have canopies supplied for added protection
against rain.

2.4 Cooling

The method of cooling for all low voltage motors shall be in accordance with IEC 60034 cooling
code IC 41 (totally enclosed, fan self-cooled), unless otherwise specified on the data sheets.

2.5 Flameproof Protection

The degree of flameproof protection shall be specified on the relevant data sheets in accordance
with IEC 60079 in accordance with the following:

a. For motors located in areas classified as Non-Hazardous, no degree of explosion protection


shall be specified, therefore requiring no special enclosure.

R4 b. For motors located in areas classified as Zone 1, Explosion Group IIA, Temperature Code T3,
the degree of protection shall be EEx d IIA T3 (flameproof) for the motor.

R4 c. For motors located in areas classified as Zone 2, Explosion Group IIA, Temperature Code T3,
the degree of protection shall be EEx n IIA T3 (non-sparking).

2.6 Bearings and Lubrication

R4 2.6.1 Motors shall be provided with anti-friction bearings. Bearings shall be grease lubricated.
"Sealed for Life" bearings are acceptable through 22 kW.

R4 2.6.2 Regreaseable lubricated anti-friction bearings shall be mounted with easily accessible grease
fittings and external relief ports.

2.6.3. Supplier shall supply American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA) identification
numbers (or fully traceable equal) on data sheets and in operating manual(s).

2.6.4 Radial and thrust bearings for vertical motors shall be rated for minimum 25 000 hour, L-10
life at maximum expected loads. Maximum expected loads, if any, from driven equipment shall be
included in calculating the life.

2.6.5 The L-10 bearing life for direct connected horizontal motors shall be at least 40 000 hours.

2.6.6 The L-10 bearing life for geared or belted applications shall be at least 25 000 hours.

2.7 Insulation Systems

2.7.1 The motor shall have a Class F rated, nonhygroscopic insulation system. Motor leads in the
terminal boxes shall have the same insulation class as the windings.

2.8 Materials

2.8.1 Motor materials shall be as follows:

- cast iron frame, bearing brackets and fan cover


- cast iron terminal box
- non-sparking fan
- zinc or cadmium plated hardware
- copper motor windings

2.8.2 Materials of construction shall be identified in the proposal with the applicable ASTM or AISI
numbers, including material grade.

2.8.3 When the Supplier's quoted material Specification standard is not of ASTM or AISI (e.g. DIN,
JIS, etc.), the proposal shall indicate the nearest equivalent ASTM Specification along with exact
and specific deviations.

2.8.4 A list of material, physical and chemical properties, and test requirements shall also be
provided. Supplier shall also provide details of satisfactory experience with the proposed material in
similar conditions.

2.9 Motor Starting and Operating Requirements

2.9.1 Motors shall be designed for full voltage starting. The nameplate voltage will be as specified
on the relevant data sheets.

2.9.2 Motors shall be capable of starting three consecutive times starting from rated ambient
temperature and two consecutive times from rated maximum temperature. The rated maximum
temperature is the rated ambient temperature plus the rated temperature rise.

2.9.3 Motors shall be capable of starting and safely accelerating the fully loaded driven equipment
without overheating the motor when the motor terminal voltage is 80% of the nameplate value.

3. ACCESSORIES

3.1 General

R4 3.1.1 All motors shall be provided with terminal boxes suitably sized and have threaded cable
entrances. All auxiliary devices shall be wired to properly labeled terminal blocks in the terminal
boxes. A grounding lug shall be provided in the main terminal box. Gaskets shall be provided,
when required for flameproof protection, between the box and cover and between the box and the
motor frame.

R4 3.1.2 Motors rated 37 kW and larger shall be provided with anticondensation heaters. The
electrical power supplied for the anticondensation heaters rated 1800 W and smaller shall be
120 volts, single phase, 60 Hz and the power for the heaters larger than 1800 W shall be 460 volts,
three phase, 60 Hz. The anticondensation heaters shall be wired to a separate terminal box. A
wiring diagram shall be provided showing all connections, the supply voltage as specified on the
data sheets, and the power requirement of each heater.

R4 3.1.3 Power terminal boxes shall be located on top of the motor.

3.1.4 Motors shall have permanent lifting devices such as eye bolts.

3.1.5 Cooling fans shall be of non-sparking material (see Article 2.8) and shall be designed for
rotation as required by the driven equipment.

3.2 Nameplates

3.2.1 Nameplates shall be stainless steel and must be attached permanently to a non-replaceable
part of the motor.

3.2.2 Nameplate information as called for by IEC 60034, Part 1, Section 10, is required. This
includes:

- manufacturers name
- type or model number
- serial number
- type of operation and duty code (if applicable)
- rated output power (kW)
- rated voltage (volts)
- rated current (amps), type of current (AC or DC)
- rated frequency and number of phases
- rated speed (rpm)

- class of insulation and permissible temperature rise ( C)
- applicable Specifications
- winding connection symbols
- power factor at full load
o
- ambient temperature ( C)
- altitude above sea level (m)
- motor weight (kg)

3.2.3 Additional information, either on the same or on an additional nameplate is required as


follows:

- Purchase Order number / project identification


- equipment item/tag number
- service description
- area classification
- certification number and national authoritative body
- type of flameproof protection for both motor and terminal boxes (if applicable)
- cooling method code (IC- )
- mounting code (IM- )
- weather protection code (IP- ) for both motor and terminal boxes
- allowable run-up time
- rated efficiency
- bearing type and identification numbers
- lubrication information
- direction of rotation

4. INSPECTION AND TESTING

4.1 General

4.1.1 The Supplier shall keep the following data available for at least 5 years for examination by the
Purchaser or the Purchaser's representative upon request:

a. Necessary certification of materials, such as Mill Test Reports.


b. Purchase Specifications for all items on Bill of Materials.
c. Test data to verify compliance to the requirements of this Specification.
d. Results of documented tests and inspections.

4.2 Inspection

4.2.1 Motors are subject to inspection during their manufacturing and testing if specified on the
data sheet. Authorized representatives of the Purchaser shall be allowed access to the
manufacturer's shop and offices at all reasonable times for purposes of inspection and obtaining
information on the progress of work. Five (5) working days written notice is required prior to testing.

4.3 Testing

4.3.1 Each motor shall be individually tested.

4.3.2 Motors shall be tested in accordance with IEC 60034 routine testing procedures.

5. SURFACE PREPARATION AND PAINTING

5.1 General

5.1.1 Surface preparation and painting of motors must be suitable for the environmental conditions
stated on the relevant data sheets.

5.1.2 All machined bare metal surfaces, e.g., joints and shaft extensions, shall be suitably
protected against corrosion. Coatings of shaft extensions for shipping purposes must be easily
removable by washing or peeling.

5.1.3 The surface preparation and painting of the equipment shall be Supplier's standard suitable
for the environment listed on the Project Design Data Sheet.

6. CERTIFICATION

6.1 General

Materials shall be certified by the Supplier.

6.2 Hazardous Area Certification

Requirements for certification shall be specified on the relevant data sheets.

7. PACKING AND SHIPPING

7.1 General

7.1.1 The type of packing to be used must be suitable for all commonly used means of
transportation from manufacturer's location to the driven equipment manufacturer's location, unless
otherwise specified on the relevant data sheets.

7.1.2 Marking of shipping containers is subject to the Purchaser's approval. Adequate marking is
required to ensure positive identification.

8. DATA AND DOCUMENTATION

8.1 General

8.1.1 For the technical quotation, the Supplier shall supply technical descriptions, completed inquiry
data sheets, catalogs, exceptions list, standard drawings, and other material to enable the
Purchaser's engineers to thoroughly evaluate the proposal as to its compliance with the inquiry
Specifications and data sheets.

8.1.2 The Supplier data to be provided following the awarding of the contract and Purchase Order
shall be according to the project Supplier data requirements.
