Assignment 2 (Due 7th October 2021)

1. Draw the phase diagram of Ag. Use the data provided in Appendix C of Robert
DeHoff.

2. Some of the allotropic forms of Carbon are graphite, diamond,

Buckminsterfullerene (C60) and Fullerene C70. Graphite and diamond are stable
phases while C60 and C70 are metastable phases. A research paper cited online
has argued that, graphite can transform to diamond at room temperature (298 K)
and 1 atm pressure. That is
𝐶𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑝ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 → 𝐶𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑑

a. At 298 K, what is the Gibbs Free energy change (∆𝐺) for the above
reaction?

b. Is the reaction spontaneous at 298 K? Explain.

c. Is the diamond thermodynamically stable relative to graphite? Explain.

d. Based on the answers obtained for questions 4a, 4b and 4c, is the
researcher’s argument corrects? Explain.

3. Calculate the enthalpy (J/mol) and entropy (J/Kmol) changes of iron in the FCC
structure when it is brought, without phase transformation from a temperature of
1250 K and a pressure of 1 atm to 1600 K and 10,000 atm. The data at 1250 K are
as follows:
𝑂
𝑉𝐹𝑒 = 7.31 𝑐𝑚3 ⁄𝑚𝑜𝑙
𝛼 = 0.63 × 10−4 𝐾 −1 , 𝛽 = 1.10 × 10−6𝑎𝑡𝑚−1
𝐶𝑃𝑂 = 5.80 + 1.98 × 10−3 𝑇 𝐶𝑎𝑙⁄𝐾 𝑚𝑜𝑙
