Compare & Contrast Paragraph
In this unit, you are going to study how to write a compare & contrast paragraph.
1) Definition
Compare and contrast paragraph is the paragraph made by two (2) ways (comparing or
contrasting) 2 objects/things.
- Comparing is to write similarities between 2 objects/things.
- Contrasting is to write differences between 2 objects/ things.
*As the writer, you could write a compare & contrast paragraph only through one (1) of those
two ways – comparing or contrasting.
2) Generic structure of Descriptive Paragraph:
a. General Statement : The paragraph informing about general things of 2 objects.
b. Body of Paragraph : The paragraph informing abouts comparation or contrast of
characteristics (ciri-ciri) between 2 objects
c. Conclusion : The last paragraph concluding all information.
3) Language Feature of Compare & Contrast Paragraph
a. Use “Present Tense”
b. Use Transitive Conjunction “However, Furthermore, Besides, Moreover, Therefore,”
c. Use Correlative conjunction “Because, Although, Whereas”
Example:
Soup and Soto
In recent years, there are more people pay attention to their daily food. They try to eat food based on
their health criteria. There are many choices of health food to eat. There are soup and Soto. Soup and
Soto are similar to each other. They are both healthy.

1) Paragraf 1 di atas membahas komparasi / comparing (perbandingan) antara 2 subjects (Soup and Soto)
2) Membahas komparasi karena penulis menjelaskan “similar” (kesamaan) dari Soup and Soto
3) Paragraf 1 hanya menjelaskan kesamaan saja.
Both soup and soto are good to our health. Both are high in fiber and less calorie content. Because of
this, soup and soto can be good for diet and prevent obesity. Moreover, both soup and soto are
made by ourselves by paying attention to natural vegetables such as the use of cabbage, lettuce,
bean, wortel, and sprouts. They both contain many low fat content that affects a goodness to body
health.

1) Paragraf 2 di atas membahas characteristics (ciri-ciri) antara 2 subjects (Soup and Soto)
2) Membahas characteristics (ciri-ciri) dengan karena penulis menjelaskan kandungan apa dan terbuat dari
apa dari 2 subjects itu.
3) Paragraf 2 menggunakan transitive conjunction (because of this) dan correlative conjunction (moreover)
Therefore, soup and soto are alike in that they are both healthy. To make our body healthty, we must
consume less-calorie foods. We also eat more fiber and low fat foods. We must consider the positive
effect of these foods on our future.

1) Paragraf 3 di atas membahas conclusion (kesimpulan) antara 2 subjects (Soup and Soto)
2) Membahas kesimpulan karena penulis menjelaskan lagi informasi sebelumnya di paragraf 1 dan 2
3) Paragraf 3 menggunakan transitive conjunction (therefore)

Since this pandemic, students, office workers and also universities are no longer doing classroom studies
but have been replaced by online learning. There are many ways to do online learning, namely by zoom
or gmeet. Both are learning together, it's just that the learning system is different. General
Statement
The difference between learning online and learning in class is that in online learning the learning system
is not through face-to-face both those who work in offices and schools and colleges, starting from
collecting assignments and also presentations only via laptops, cellphones, and computers but all of that
requires wifi and quota if we want to study online. Not to mention if the wifi signal or connection is lost if
you want to send task files etc. While the learning system in the classroom or directly, namely through
face to face with teachers, superiors, and also lecturers. Both from assignment submissions and
presentations, we no longer need to think about disconnected wifi because we haven't yet collected
assignments or via zoom and gametes. Only by handing over to the person concerned the task is

Even though studying online and studying in different classes, we still have to accept it for our health in
order to avoid the virus that is spreading and also break the chain of the virus. By learning online or
studying in class, of course there are drawbacks but behind it all there are advantages of each, one
example is that by learning online we make it easier in terms of not having to spend money to go to
