• I wish I was taller than I am.
To express regret about a past situation, we can
use: wish or if only + past perfect
• I wish I had been more self-confident when I was a teenager (but I
wasn’t)
• I wish Poland had won Euro 2016 (but we didn’t)
• If only I had studied more for the last test, I would have passed. (but I
didn’t)
To express annoyance (irytacje), we use:
wish or if only + Would + infinitive
• I wish people would stop throwing rubbish on the ground
• If only my neighbour would stop parking his car in my parking spot
• I wish I could go to the cinema with you tomorrow (I would like to go.
This suggests that I can’t)
• If only I could go to the cinema with you tomorrow (I would like to go.
This suggests that I can’t)
• John wishes he could take tomorrow off work. (He would like to, but
he can’t)
To express preference now we use:
Would rather + infinitive (without to) - when subjects are the
same person
Would rather + past simple - when subjects are different
people
• Jake would rather stay at home
• I’d rather watch a different movie
• Zoe started work when she left school. She would rather have gone to
university.
• It’s about time you made up your mind about the future
• It’s high time you decided what movie to watch.
