TOPIC 5 Education for Desirable Filipino Values
Dale Jordan A. Gumahad & Felton Fur N. Torralba

We have discussed thoroughly about the Filipino Values both the negative
and the desirable ones such as Optimism, Debt of Gratitude, Flexibility,
Camaraderie, Hospitality, Adaptability, Family-centered, being Competitive,
being Respectful, having the spirit of Bayanihan and among others. In order
to preserve these “desirable Filipino-values” – the government incorporated
these into our education system.

After the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986, the Aquino government
realized that rebuilding a nation was more difficult than ousting a dictator. A
social revolution was required to guide the country through its transition to
re-establish democratic institutions, freedom, and dignity for the Filipino
people. Because of that, it was stated in Article XIV Section 3 of the 1987
Philippine Constitution

“…clearly mandates all educational institutions to inculcate patriotism and

nationalism, foster love of humanity, respect for human rights, appreciation
of the role of national heroes in the historical development of the country,
teach the rights and duties of citizenship, strengthen ethical and spiritual
values and develop moral character and creative thinking, broaden scientific
and technological knowledge and promote vocational efficiency.

Thus, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) identified

"Social Transformation through Education" as its priority and began a Values
Education Programme for all levels of the school system thru DECS Order
No. 6 of 1988 entitled – Values Education for the Filipino. Values Education
Framework was authored by Dr. Lourdes R. Quisumbing (DECS Secretary).
In 1988 – 1990, Values Education was introduced as a separate subject.
On September 30, 1992, President Fidel V. Ramos signed Presidential
Proclamation No. 62 which enjoined the active participation of all sectors of
society in the Moral Recovery Program (MRP).

Values education is the process by which values, attitudes and habits are
formed as the learner interacts with the environment under the guidance of
a teacher.
TOPIC Ender Values: A Challenge for Today and Tomorrow
Ana Leizel Tubio

Values- is a standard of behavior

-          Are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate
attitudes or actions
-          Are a person’s or society’s beliefs about good behavior and
what things are important

We Filipinos have a strong influence about values that was first taught at
home and are applied in our day to day lives.

Desirable Filipino Values: The Best of Filipino Values
a)      Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya (Family Oriented)
b)      Respect
c)      God- fearing
d)      Pakikisama(Helping Others)
e)      Hospitality
f)       Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude)
g)      Love and Happiness

These are just some of the Filipino values that will prevail even if the years
will pass by. It will never be removed because it serves as a distinction
among other race. Definitely, it’s more fun in the Philippines and it’s the
best to be part of Filipino family.

Clarification,  Education for Nationalism

Education has played a prominent role in the awakening and fostering of
nationalism, which led to the autonomy and independence of many former
colonized countries around the world.

If the Philippines is to develop and remain globally competitive, then we
must focus on education. That is why I believe that every Filipino has a right
to quality education. Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero was an avid learner
and exemplary student. Rizal was the voice of his generation; he fought
tyranny and oppression through the power of education.
The present challenges us to be live with heroism, patriotism, and to have a
real vision for the future of our nation.

The values of Filipinos specifically upholds the following items: solidarity of
the family unit, security of the Philippine economy, orientation to small-
groups, personalism, the concepts of "loob" or "kalooban" (meaning "what’s
inside the self", the "inner-self", or the "actual personal feelings of the self"),
existence and maintenance of smooth interpersonal relationships, and the
sensing of the feelings or needs of others (known as pakikiramdam).

Conclusion:

Filipino people are known as settlers in many parts of the world. They are
like the chameleon who easily adapts to different environment. We, Filipinos
thrive to survive. Survival of the fittest is our banner. We have a very
unique culture due to the influences of colonization and the surrounding
countries.  We are hardworking individuals and strive to make life better for
the next generation for our families. The melting pot theory that is evident
in our culture makes our country a vibrant, exciting and diverse place to live
and visit.
