WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE

EXECUTIVE

 Peter F. Drucker
An effective executive does not need to be a leader.
What made them all effective is that they followed the same
Knowledge they needed:
1) They asked, “What needs to be done?”

Eight practices: 2) They asked, “What is right for the enterprise?”

Convert the Knowledge in effective Action:
3) They developed action plans.
4) They took responsibility for decisions.
5) They took responsibility for communicating.
6) They were focused on opportunities rather than
problems.
Responsible and Accountable:
7) They ran productive meetings.
8) They thought and said “we” rather than “I.”

enterprise?
• Executives are doers; they execute.
• Before springing into action, the executive needs to plan
Effective Action: his course. He needs to think about desired results,
probable restraints, future revisions, check-in points,
and implications for how he’ll spend his time.
• The action plan has to become the basis for the
executive’s time management.
• Translate plans into action, executives need to pay
particular attention to decision making,
communication, opportunities (as opposed to problems),
and meetings.
• A systematic decision review can be a powerful tool for self-development, too. Checking the
results of a decision against its expectations shows executives what their strengths are, where they
need to improve, and where they lack knowledge or information. Executives don’t make
decisions or take actions. They delegate.
• Communicate : They share their plans with and ask for comments from all their colleagues—
superiors, subordinates, and peers. At the same time, they let each person know what information
they’ll need to get the job done. They need to pay equal attention to peers’ and superiors’
information needs.
• Good executives focus on opportunities rather than problems
Responsible • Executives make meetings productive. They must make
sure that meetings are work sessions rather than bull

and sessions.
• Effective meeting is to decide in advance what kind of
Accountable meeting it will be. Different kinds of meetings require
different forms of preparation and different results.
• The executive should listen and ask questions. He or
she should sum up about the meetings.
• Effective executives know that any given meeting is
either productive or a total waste of time.
• Don’t think or say “I.” Think and say “we”.
Dead Poets • No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas
can change the world.

Society • We must constantly look at things in a different way.

• Poetry, beauty, romance, love… these are what we
stay alive for.
• You must strive to find your own voice.

A person leading a group of people or department, who is more prone to building honest relationships with
followers/colleagues/employees by giving importance to their input, views; resulted in building an ethical
foundation. Moreover, truthful to himself/herself as well to his/her followers, with self-belief promoting

Ethics is the kinds of values and morals an individual or a society finds desirable or appropriate for everyone. To
me, it can't be different towards different people. An Ethical Leader is always directed with respect for ethical
beliefs and values, also for the dignity and rights of others; resulted in trust, honesty, consideration and fairness.
An Ethical leader always influenced by his/her moral development. Both Authentic & Ethical Leadership go hand-
in-hand.

Yes, Core set of values almost all the traits same as the authentic leader, but keeping ethical delicacy in
consideration and the core values I believe is in transparency.

• You being a leader yourself, how do you empower or try to empower people (basically the followers), to
deliver their best in any task they perform?
The basic roots to empower someone is make them learn or teach them, I feel that learning should be strong.
Understanding the shortcomings in each people, try to motivate them to overcome such grey areas as well
make them strong in their own strong hold areas. regular training and appreciation to motivate them as well.
Give opportunity to grow. And open to everyone, truthful to self-belief and same should reflect in own's
behaviour, will resulted in extracting best out of each employee.
