About Author
 Peter Ferdinand Drucker was an Austrian born American
management consultant , educator and author.
 He has been described as the Father of Modern
Management.
 He was also a leader in the development of management
and coined the terms like management by objectives , self
control and knowledge worker.
 He has got awards in America, Austria and Japan for his
contribution in nonprofit management studies.
 He published 39 books over seven decades and many
books were written about him since his death.
INTRODUCTION

 The subject of this book is managing oneself for effectiveness and management is
largely by example.
 Effectiveness is something separate and something different which does not require any
special gifts , special aptitude or special training.
 All the effective ones have had to learn to be effective and had to practice effectiveness
until it became a habit.
 The effective executive is fast becoming a key resource of society and effectiveness as
an executive a prime requirement for individual achievement and accomplishment.
Effectiveness can be learned
 Effectiveness is a complex of practices or a habit which can be learned.

 Executive is a knowledge worker in modern organisation whose position or

knowledge affects the capacity of the organisation to obtain results.

 Effective executive is expected to get the right things done.

 High intelligence and imaginations are common among executives but only

effectiveness converts them into results.

 Every knowledge worker must direct himself towards performance and

contributions through effectiveness in organization to remain competitive.


5 Habits for Effective Executive

 Know where their time goes.

 Focus on outward contribution.

 Build on strengths of their own , superiors and colleagues etc.

 Make effective decisions.

 Concentrate on few major areas with superior performance.


Know Thy Time
Effective executives do not start with their task but they start with their time and planning.

Know that time is an unique resource which is irreplaceable and is inelastic.

Remedied time managements defect such as overstaffing , malorganization or malfunctioning

information.

Keep a continuing log , analyze time periodically and set deadlines for activities.

effectiveness.
4 basic requirements of effective human relations are communications , teamwork , self
development and development of others.
Every organization need performance in 3 areas which are direct results , building of
values and their reaffirmation and developing people of tomorrow.
Knowledge worker contributes by producing ideas , information and concepts.
Focuses on efforts and performance of the whole is in literal sense is top management
within the organization.

Capacity to make common people achieve uncommon performance.

Focus on weakness is not only foolish but it is irresponsible also.

Staffing decisions to maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses.

Strong people always have strong weaknesses too as where there are peaks , there
are valleys too.

Effective executive know that they have to start with a man can do rather than
with what a job requires.
To achieve results, one has to use all the available strengths — the strengths of
associates, the strengths of the superior, and one’s own strengths as these strengths
are the true opportunities.

Focus on opportunity rather than problem.

Courage rather than analysis for identifying priorities.

conflicting views , dialogue between different points of
views and choice between different judgements.
 Voice an opinion with responsibility of defining factual
