Exp-10: Dynamic Analysis of Epicyclic Gear Train

Link (http://www.thecatalystis.com/gears/)
Aim:
To study the dynamic behaviour of epicyclic gear train on finding the speed of the different elements
involved in the epicyclic gear train and to understand the concepts of torque required for the gear train to
keep it in equilibrium.

Theory:
When the distance between the driving & driven member, (both shafts are not operating on the same
axis) is small or when a positive, slip-less drive is required, gear drives are used. Such a combination of two
or more gears is called as gear train. Gear train may be simple, compound or epicyclic gear trains. The axes
of gear have fixed position relative to each other. But in epicyclic bear trains, the axes of gears may have
relative motion to each other.
When the rotating parts of an epicyclic gear train have no angular acceleration, the gear train is kept
in equilibrium by the three externally applied torques,
1. Input torque on the driving member (T1)

2. Output torque or resisting or load torque on the driven member (T2)

3. Holding or braking or fixing torque on the fixed member (T3)

The net torque applied to the gear train must be zero. In other words,
T1+T2+T3=0 (1)
F1r1 + F2r2 + F3r3 = 0 (2)
If 1, 2, 3 are the angular speeds of the driving, driven and fixed members respectively, and
the friction be neglected, then the net kinetic energy dissipated by the gear train must be zero, i.e
T1 1 + T2 2+T3 3=0 (3)
But for a fixed member, 3=0
T1 1 + T2 2= 0 (4)
The below figure shows a sun & planet gear type epicyclic gear train. A driving motor drives the sun wheel
(S). The planetary gears (P), which mesh with the sun gear and mounted on pins, which are fitted to planet
carrier (C) pulley. Externally, planet gears mesh with the internal gear (I) which is mounted over a shaft.
This shaft also carries a pulley.
