4. Design Loads
The design loads shall be following the project’s specifications as set in “????????”, other additional loads
and loading combinations are added for the particularity of the project, taking into account the
The dead load of the façade will be composed of the steel sections, connecting brackets, pins and
anchors. These loads are generated directly by the structural design software, which readily
calculates the volume of each member and therefore its weight through its corresponding unit
weight. The glass dead load in addition to some miscellaneous materials such as plastics…etc, shall
be added as surface loads on the corresponding cladding
Win load pressure values were obtained from wind tunnel test report “Cladding Wind Load Study-
Sama Beirut” prepared by RWDI
It was assumed that the thermal, difference between day & night, summer & winter is 26° C as
expansion and contraction.
At this stage we did not consider any seismic loads on the structure, however
it should be mentioned what loads we are considering and based on which
code

5. Load Combinations
Reference is made to ASCE 7-02 “MIN. DESIGN LOADS FOR BLDGS & OTHER
STRUCTURES” the load combinations that will be applied to this item are:
Limit State:
Ultimate State:
1. 1.4 D
2. 1.2 D + 1.6 Lr for stress check & system design
3. 1.2 D + 1.6 W + 0.5Lr
4. 0.9 D + 1.6 W for stress check & system design
Check for consistency with the load combinations assumed for the façade design

6. Structural Steel Design according to AISC “MIN. DESIGN LOADS FOR BLDGS &
OTHER STRUCTURES”
The structural analysis and consequently the design was performed based on the following
assumptions:
Support Conditions:
The connection between the main truss frame (TR1) and the supporting slab at the
truss column base was assumed as pinned, for further details refer to supporting
drawings (Refer to Detail 06)
The connection between the Truss member TR1 and the sided of the concrete wall
(at top end of truss) was assumed as pinned (Refer to Detail 07)
Connection types:
Connections Details 01 & 02 are between the main beams B03/B03a/B04 and the
truss post, and they are pinned connection achieved via a shear tab plate, with a
reinforcing plate for the walls of the tube
Connection detail 03 between the aluminum secondary members ST1 and the
main beams is a pinned connection with slotted holes on one side while the other
one is with normal standard hole. Connection achieved by a gusset steel plate
welded to the main beam and bolted to a strike through plate aluminum welded to
the aluminum tube walls. Special treatment will be done for the interface between
the aluminum and the steel plates
Connection Detail 04 between the strut tube and the main beams along with the
intersecting tension rods. This connection was done with a bolted end plate
connecting the Strut and the beam together with gusset plates for the tension rods
Connection Detail 05 between the strut tube and the BUP U section (B04), the
same detail as in connection detail 04 . However B04 was supported laterally on the
adjacent RC up stand.
Structural Analysis:
Taking into account the above-mentioned assumptions a 3D model was developed for the
structure

Reference is made to CWCT, the maximum allowed vertical movement shall not exceed 3 mm.
As shown on page 17 of this report the maximum deflection due to dead load is 0.7mm < 3mm
According to BS 8118-Part 1-Table 3.4- Limiting deflection for a double glazed façade shall be ≤
L/250 where L is the Supported length of the mullion.
Based on the above the allowable deflection: Δ = 2800/250 = 11.2mm
Referring to page 20, the existing deflection under 1.0 DL + 1.0 WL is 3mm < Δ=11.2mm.
Note: As for the vertical accommodation due to vertical slab or parapet movement which is stated
in the specifications as a vertical tolerance of 36mm is properly shown in the attached drawing at
the end of this report.
For the ultimate loading case 1.2 DL + 1.2 WL, the stress developed shall be less than or equal
the yielding stress of the aluminum material = 160 MPa (based on BS8118 part 1)
