Hospitals are one of the most complex building to design. With the wide range of
services and functional units that it provides, it shall be designed and planned to meet
the prescribed programs, conform to building laws and space requirements and observe
proper architectural and engineering practices.
The basic services that a general hospitals offer include: short-term
hospitalization, emergency room services, general and specialty surgical services. The
sizes of general hospitals can range from 200 to 1000 beds – mostly between 500 and
800 beds – and they provide 24-hour medical and nursing care of the sick and disabled.
They also supply out-patient services and many now provide day-care facilities
where patients are admitted for simple operations and diagnostic testing, then to be
returned home the same day. General hospitals also incorporate an accident and
emergency department.

DEFINITION OF REQUIRED SPACES


A. Administrative
 Main entrance lobby
- area located at the main entrance of the building used as the main entry from the
outside
 Main waiting area

- A library that provides specific information like researches and medical
techniques, that hospital staff need.

- An office in the hospital where it is arranged to provide individual offices for local
representatives of professionals
 Staff conference and lounge room
- A room where staff may socialize, rest and have conferences
 Toilet facilities
- water closets, urinals, lavatories, and the rooms provided for installation of these
units.
 Cashiers office
- Office intended for the hospital cashier and its staff
 Vault room
- For storing important staff’s belongings

- An office in the building where hospital staff work sitting at their personal desks

- A hospital facility where a specific staff prepares, compounds, stocks and
dispenses inpatient medications

- It is where specific medications are dispensed over-the-counter and prescription
medications to outpatients.

- An office where the doctor and his/her secretary provide treatment to patients

assistance towards health care of the public

D. Maternity Department and Nursery


 Delivery rooms
- A room where obstetrician assist deliveries and labors for mothers. This is also
where mothers spend their recoveries
 Scrub-up
- Placed next to delivery rooms where nurses and obstetrician sanitize before
going into delivery rooms
 Labor rooms
- Where mothers spend their labor hours and recovery
 Clean-up sterile rooms
- For cleaning and sterilizing equipment before and after it is used

 Nurses station
- location at which nursing staff perform charting and related activities throughout
their shift
 Nursery (full-term) at least 12-bassiness
-  an area for nurses to take care of newborn babies, separate from their mothers.
 Observation nursery
- An area for continuous monitoring of babies with special treatment
 Pre-mature nursery
- Where babies with special monitoring, oxygen or an intravenous tube are taken
care of by the nurses
 Doctors and nurse lounge room with kitchenette
- With lounge areas for doctors and nurses with kitchen service
 Bedroom with toilet
- Room intended for private use of staff at shift

- A recreational space exposed to the sun which is used by patients and visitors

- Provided for the patient’s relatives to look upon their dead loved one for one last
time

E. Pediatric Department

 4 private wards with locker and T&B


- Contains only 1 bed for private use of fee-paying patient, provided with personal
lockers and Td

- It is also a patient ward but with lesser amenities and cheaper fee; not a private
ward

- Recreational space for patients during the day; it like a living room; basically,
parents may also join their admitted kids to socialize with them

- Where medical staff store medications for use at the hospital

- Where patients and visitors wait; where they are consulted by the pediatrician

F. Laboratory Department

 Waiting area
- Area where patients and visitors wait until further notice

- Private office for the pathologist in charge

- Area for the pathologist’s secretary

- Where specialists study bacteria that cause human infections; must be secured
and isolated

- Where patient’s urine samples are studied

- Like blood tests but dig deeper into studying it

- Where specialists diagnose and study patient’s tissues

 Biochemistry
- Various tests are held here that concerns body fluids and tissues

- Where blood tests happen

- Area where laboratory equipment is cleaned, sterilized and sanitize before and
after uses

- Area where blood is stored in a certain temperature

- Stores variety of research references for laboratory use

- laboratory staff and visitors rest and relax in this space

G. Autopsy and Morgue Room


- storage for human corpse or deceased patients are placed in the morgue room;
Where human corpse await removal for autopsy

H. General Services
 Central Storage
- The main storage room of the hospital; bigger in size compared to other storage
rooms

- Where hospital garbage is separated, recycled, and collected; this space should
be designed carefully due to toxic hospital wastes

- Where maintenance staff can rest during their break; also provide storage for
their personal belongings

 Dietician Room
- Office for the hospital dietician

- Additional storage room

 Laundry Room
- Where dirty hospital laundry is cleaned; should be located away from the main
service area of hospital

 Central Linen
- Where all textiles used in the hospital are stored

- Room intended to store electrical equipment

- The maintenance facility of the hospital; tasked for maintaining the building and
its equipment

- Can be modular design for the sole purpose of containing covid-19; may be open
