B. Developmental Activities

1. Activity
Familiarize yourself with the following tiles:

Stands for Stands for

+ X2 -X2 +1

-1
+X -X

Try using the tiles to show the product of the following:

1. (2x)(x)
2. (x) (-x +1)
3. (3+x)(x-2)

2. Analysis Can you use the tiles to show the product in item 1?
What about item 2 and 3?
How can you use the tiles to show the product?

Recall the Laws of Exponents. The answer to item (1) should not be a
surprise. By the Laws of Exponents, (2x) (x) = 2x2 .

2x

So, 2x2 is represented by two of the big shaded squares.

The product (x)(-x+1) can be represented by the following:

-x +1

The picture shows that the product is (x)(-x+1). Recall the sign rules for
multiplying.

x-2

3+x

The third item is (3 + x)(x - 2). Using the tiles to show the product.
x2 + 3x+ (-2x) - 6 = x2+ x - 6
3. Abstraction Rules in Multiplying Polynomials

A. Monomial by Monomial
To multiply a monomial by another monomial, simply multiply the
numerical coefficients then multiply the literal coefficients by
applying the basic laws of exponent.
Examples:
1. (x4) (x5) = x9
2. (6x2) (-8x16) = -48x18
Solutions:
1. x(4+5) = x8
2. (6)(-8)(x(2+16)) = -48x18

Find the product of (3x) (x).

Using the tiles you can show
the product.
x

3x

By applying the laws of exponent, you can get the answer.

The answer is 3x2.

B. Monomial by Polynomial
To multiply monomial by a polynomial, simply apply the
distributive property and follow the rule in multiplying monomial by
a monomial.

Examples:
1. 4x (x2-5x+7) = 4x3-20x2+28x
2. 6x (x3+8x2+9x) = 6x4+48x3+54x2

Solutions:
1. 4x. x2= 4x3
4x. -5x= -20x2
4x. 7= 28x
2. 6x. x3= 6x4
6x. 8x2= 48x3
6x. 9x= 54x2
C. Binomial by Binomial
To multiply binomial by another binomial, simply distribute the first
term of the first binomial to each term of the other binomial then
distribute the second term to each term of the other binomial and
simplify the results by combining similar terms. This procedure is
also known as the F-O-I-L method or Smile method. Another way is
the vertical way of multiplying which is the conventional one.

Examples:
1. (x+4)(x+5)
F =>(x)(x)= x2
O =>(x)(5)= 5x
I =>(x)(4)= 4x
L =>(4)(5)= 20

First terms Last terms

(x + 4) (x + 5)

Outer terms Inner terms

Answer: x2+5x+4x+20 = x2+9x+20

2. 2x-3
x x-7
-14x-21
2x2+3x
2x2-11x-21
D. Polynomial with more than one term by a Polynomial with three
or more terms
To multiply a polynomial with more than one term by a polynomial
with three or more terms, simply distribute the first term of the first
polynomial to each term of the other polynomial. Repeat the
procedure up to the last term and simplify the results by combining
similar terms.

Examples:
1. (x+4)(x2-2x+3)
= x(x2-2x+3)-4(x2-2x+3)
= x3-2x2+3x-4x2+8x-12
= x3-6x2+11x-12
2. (2x-3)(3x+2)(x2-3x-1)
= (6x2-5x-6)(x2-3x-1)
= 6x4-18x3-6x2-5x3+15x2+5x-6x2+18x+6
= 6x4-23x3+3x2+23x+6
In this lesson, you learned about multiplying polynomials using
different approaches: using the Tiles, using the FOIL, and using
the vertical way of multiplying numbers.

4. Application Call a student or ask for volunteers.

Solve the following problems.
1. Give the product of each of the following.
a. (12x5y2z) (-13ax4z2)
b. 3x2(4x2 – 4x – 8)
2. Find the volume of the rectangular prism whose length, width and
height are (x + 6) meter, (x – 2) meter and (4x + 5) meter.
(Hint: Volume of rectangular prism = l x w x h)

IV. EVALUATION I. Give the product of the following:

1. (10x6y7z8)(-11x7y12z4)
2. 4x4(5x8-4x6-6x3)
3. (6x-8)(3x+6)(3x3+6x+8)
II. Real-Life Application
Buying pencil. If I bought (6x + 5) pencils which cost
(7x – 1) pesos each, how much will I pay for it?
