III. EXERCISE SET 3.3

Use Polya’s four-step problem-solving strategy and the problem-solving procedures
presented in this section to solve each of the following exercises.

 Height of Ladders. If two ladders are placed end to end, their combined height is
31.5 feet. One ladder is 6.5 feet shorter than the other ladder. What are the height
of the two ladders?
Given: one ladder = x - 6.5 feet
other ladder = x
combined height = 31.5 feet
Solution:
other ladder:
x + x – 6.5 = 31.5
2x – 6.5 = 31.5
2x = 6.5 + 31.5
2 x /2 = 38/2
x = 19

x – 6.5
19 – 6.5 = 12.5

Checking:
Combined height: 19 + 12.5 = 31.5
Answer: The height of the two ladders are 19 feet and 12.5 feet

 Number of games. In a basketball league consisting of 12 teams, each team plays

each of the other teams exactly twice. How many league games will be played?
 Given : 12 teams
Each team played each of the other team twice = x(2)
Number of league games played = ?
