Diploma Program in Production Technology (Mould Technology)

KP(BPSG)5195/331(45)(KR5005)11/2011

Plastic processing, Injection moulding theory and design technologies are combined to produce
a medium of mass production termed as Plastic injection moulds. The use of plastics has
expanded rapidly during the last several decades, with applications continually expanding, and
developed into new products. The significant challenge in producing an injection moulded part
results to a complex interaction between material, part design, mould and process.

Each plastic part produced presents different degrees of challenge, and a mould must be
custom designed and built. An engineer or a company faces these challenges and financial risks
to ensure that the mould produced will be successful and aid further manufacturing process.
Local companies and Multi National companies operating in Malaysia has the capacity to run
production in large volumes, quickly with excellent repeatability, and at minimum cost. In
Malaysia, the industry has reached a successful level and adequate capabilities, providing
growth for the economy and careers for our people.

In GMI, the training and learning in plastic injection moulding process is the predominant
method for producing plastic parts. Trainees are exposed to modern manufacturing methods,
with emphasis on conventional and CNC machining, Injection moulding theory and design,
measurement techniques and quality assurance. Overall, the training in GMI equips an
individual to become competent in this field. Trainees will be ready for employment in the
manufacturing sector, particularly in the field of mould technology.

Course Brief

The Mould Technology course is three-year diploma program that focuses on aspects of plastic
injection process and machine tools. It concentrates on modern fabrication activities such as
conventional and CNC machining, mould design and construction with versatile CAD suites and
Computer Aided Machining (CAM) for programming and CNC machining, metrology, materials
and final year projects.

The first year is the foundation year where students are exposed to fundamental training,
machining, blue print, material science and metrology. In the second and third years, advanced
theory and practical in polymers, plastic injection moulds construction and design, material
flow simulation for optimizing of plastic component design, machine operation, mould
maintenance and quality control are taught as their specialization. Students will also carry out
Final Year Project similar to industrial project to enhance the knowledge and skills gained.

Nature of Work

Prospective graduates will handle various machine tools, fabricate and troubleshoot dies,
operate specialized machines, tools, jigs and fixtures. In the plastic injection environment,
computer-assisted machining and mould design using CAD suites are very important elements
to produce complex and highly finished machined surfaces. Other than design and machining
tasks, graduates also need to be familiar with machining properties, such as material hardness,
cutting tools and a wide variety of metals sand alloy suitable for mould inserts and cavities.
