CHAPTER-01

TOPIC: SHAVING

WHAT IS SHAVING?

Shaving is a secondary cutting operation. It is done by removing a small

amount of material from the previously cut edge [usually blanking or piercing].

PURPOSE OF SHAVING:

1. To improve the dimensional accuracy of the piece part.

2. To improve the cut edge characteristics of the piece part.
3. To improve the flatness of the piece part.

CLEARANCE PROVIDED FOR SHAVING:

The cutting clearance in shaving operation is practically nil. A close fit

between the punch and die is maintained with minimum possible clearance. In case
of larger shaving allowance a cutting clearance of 5 % of shaving allowance will
be acceptable.

SHAVING ALLOWANCE:

The width of the scrap web removed by the shaving operation is the shave
allowance.
The formula to calculate the shave allowance is as explained:

Shaving allowance for steel:

A = C+ 0.04 x S
Or minimum of 0.08mm
A1= C or minimum of 0.04
2

Shaving allowance for brass & copper:

A = C or minimum 0.08mm

A1= C or minimum 0.04mm

2
Where,
C= cutting clearance used for previous cutting operation.
A= Shave allowance for single shaving operation or for first shave when
more than one shaving operation is employed.
A1= shave allowance for second shave operation where two shaves are
employed.

DIRECTION OF SHAVING:

The cutting direction for a shaving operation should be the same as the
cutting direction of the previous cutting operation.

This directional relationship is illustrated in fig 1.1. Views A and B depict

the ideal directional relationship of an external shave operation to the blanking
operation, which precedes it. At ‘A’ the piece part is shown, as it will be produced
by a blanking operation; the burr side of its outer periphery is toward the punch.
At ‘B’ the piece part is shown, as it should appear when about to be shaved by the
shave die: the burr side of its external periphery is toward the punch, just as it was
in previous operation. It is apparent by examination that the cutting direction
relative to the piece part is the same for both operations.

Fig 1.1 illustrates Direction of Shaving.

Views ‘C’ & ‘D’ depict the ideal directional relationship of an internal
shave operation to the piercing operation, which precedes it. View ‘C’ is typical
for piercing operations: the burr side of the pierced hole is toward the pierce- die
opening. View ‘D’ pictures the manner the in which the work should be positioned
for shaving. The burr side of the previously pierced hole is toward the die opening
in the shave die. Here, too it is apparent by examination that the relative cutting
direction is the same for the both operations.

STRIPPING FORCE REQUIRED IN SHAVING:

Stripping force is more in case of shaving operations. It is two or three

times more than the stripping force required for an equivalent blanking or piercing
operation.

1. A blank of outside diameter 40mm and inside diameter 10mm is to be

shaved inside and outside in single stage. Calculate the shave allowance and
decide the component size for blanking and the pierced hole size.

MATERIAL: St-42
THICKNESS: 2mm
T max: 360 n/mm2

Shaving allowance for St-42 in single stage

A= C+[0.04xS]

C= 0.005x2 360
10
Clearance=0.06mm

A=0.06+[0.04x2]

Shave allowance=0.14mm

Size of Blank:
Outside diameter = 40+(2x0.14)
= 40.28mm.

Inside diameter = 10-(2x0.14)

= 9.72mm.
