LAB #3
To measure the transient response of freewheeling diode using oscilloscope and
MATLAB
Objectives
In this lab we measure the transient response of the freewheeling diode using oscilloscope
To measure the transient response of the freewheeling diode after changing the duty cycle
To measure the transient response of the freewheeling diode using MATLAB
Methodology
In this lab we learnt about. A fly back diode is a diode connected across an inductor used to eliminate
fly back, which is the sudden voltage spike seen across an inductive load when its supply current is
suddenly reduced or interrupted.

If switch S1 is closed in the above figure for time t1, a current is well-known through the load; and then if
the switch is opened, a path must be provided for the current in the inductive load. Otherwise, the inductive
energy induces a very high voltage and this energy is dissipated as heat across the switch as spark.
The above circuit is operating in the two models: Mode 1 begins when the switch is closed at t=0 mode 2
begins when the switch is then opened
The output waveform

CONCLUSION
In this lab I learnt the transient response of the freewheeling diode using oscilloscope, and with the help of
the MATLAB software
