PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
Description

The GSI 66-67-68 are microprocessor based diagnostic Audiometers for use in the clinical /
diagnostic environment.

This unit permits the output routing of the test signal through earphones (TDH-39) or paired Insert
Phones (EAR-TONE 3A), and on GSI 67 and GSI 68 a bone vibrator (B71), and optional
loudspeakers.

Air and Bone conduction and Masking together with powerful features make the GSI 67 an
extremely flexible and easy operated audiometer.

The GSI 66-67-68 can be used either manually or completely automatically. The automatic test
mode enables automatic threshold determination for both Air and on GSI 67 and GSI 68 also Bone
conduction, with or without masking.

From a special set-up menu the audiometer is easily programmed according to individual needs.

50 audiograms can be stored in an internal non-volatile memory. All test results can be viewed on
the display and/or printed and/or transmitted to a computer.

On the GSI 67 and 68 masking is automatically presented in the contra lateral ear and for further
ease-of-use the level of masking can be set to automatically track the stimulus level.

Optional separate sound field system may be added to the GSI 67 and 68 for free field audiometry.

The calibration is easily carried out by using the front panel buttons and the turning dials.

An RS 232 interface is fitted as standard, which allows the GSI 66-67-68 to be used together with a
printer or computer.

The volume can be adjusted on the built-in talk forward microphone.

Correct date and time is automatically given by an integrated clock.

An optional lamp or a sound buzzer alerts the operator on completion of the automatic test
sequence.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Routine Maintenance

Biological Calibration The microprocessor based circuit design of the GSI 66-67-68
Check Audiometers should provide trouble-free service for a long time. It is
recommended however to routinely make and file the audiogram of
one person who will be available for this purpose. This person (or
group of persons) should have a known stable audiometric curve that
does not exceed 25 dB HL at any frequency. For consistency, do this
when the audiometer is first installed, and on a regular basis
thereafter. Remember that the individuals threshold can shift by 5 dB
from day to day; however, variations that exceed this range may point
to difficulties that require attention.

Periodic Checks The routine maintenance checks described below may point to the
source of some instrument problems. If they do not: have a service
technician check the instrument before further use. The checks should
be made at periodic intervals, even if biologic checks reveal no
problems. These procedures assume normal hearing of the person
doing the checking.
Earphones and Bone With extended use, earphones and bone vibrator cords tend to fray
vibrator cords internally at the connectors. This fraying will ultimately change the
signal level or cause complete signal failures as the cord is flexed.
To check for either condition, turn on the GSI 66-67-68. Set the HL to
a comfortably audible level. Activate the PRESENT button. Flex the
cord next to the plug at both ends of each earphone. Listen for an
intermittent signal, abrupt changes in the signal level, or a scratchy
sound riding over the signal that coincides with the flexing of the cord.
The presence of any of these conditions signifies that the cord should
be replaced.
Repeat the test for the other earphone, the bone vibrator and any
other optional sound transmitter.
Hum and Noise Turn the Hearing Level control from 0 to 60 dB HL and activate the
interrupter at all levels. Listen through the earphones for low
frequency hum and any other noise. Some audible noise at levels
above 70 dB is permissible. If these noises are detected below 70 dB
HL, schedule the audiometer for maintenance.
Distortion and Frequency Make this check by listening to the GSI 66-67-68 output through the
Shift earphones and activating the interrupter for all frequencies at a loud
but not uncomfortable level (70 to 80 dB HL for normal ears). Listen
also to ascertain that the signal frequencies change appropriately
when the Frequency dial is operated. If distortion is heard in one
earphone but not in the other, the chances are high that the earphone
is at fault and should be replaced. In any case, the audiometer should
be scheduled for immediate maintenance.

Internal Controls Check Should the front panel controls lock into one state and you are not
able to change any of the parameters, turn off the power. Wait one
minute and turn the power back on.
Bone Vibrator Check This check must be performed in a quiet environment or in a sound
(not GSI 66) room. With the frequency Hz set to 2000 Hz, the Hearing Level set at
40 dB HL and the bone vibrator positioned properly, the tone should
be clearly audible to a person with a hearing loss not in excess of 25
dB. When a bone vibrator fails this test, the calibration should be
verified. If the bone vibrator cannot be calibrated to specifications, it
should be replaced.
Masking Level Check Activate the masking noise. Listen for a smooth, even hiss with the
(not GSI 66) level control set at 50 dB HL.

Talk Forward Check Speech should be clearly audible (in the earphones) when spoken in a
normal tone with the control set at 60 dB.

CALIBRATION
Calibration should be carried out by specially trained personnel only.

General

A special calibration mode is used to perform the transducer calibration only using the front panel
buttons and the turning dials.

Calibration should be performed at yearly intervals and also when earphones/ bone conductors are
changed and after all service.

The calibration values are stored in an EEPROM together with a checksum and are set by the
calibration routine described below.

Upon selection of each frequency and transducer, the checksum’s integrity is checked.
Should the checksum fail, the affected transducer/frequency is disabled and the message (”CAL.”)
will be displayed. All other combinations may still be used.

The GSI 66-67-68 automatically handles the dB (SPL) - dB (HL) correction according to ISO389
standard Table 1 (coupler IEC 303, B&K 4152) and the calibration is done only to compensate for
the spread of headphones / bone conductor sensitivity.

Note that you still have to compensate for your calibration microphone (or artificial mastoid’s)
non-linearity.
If you are using a coupler according to IEC 318 you must compensate for the difference
between that coupler and the IEC 303, see table IEC303 / IEC318 below.

Before entering the calibration mode note which frequencies are activated by turning the
FREQUENCY Hz dial. When entering the calibration mode all 11 frequencies will be set to on and
the not wanted frequencies has to be deactivated manually.
At delivery of GSI 67 and 68 all frequencies are activated but the user might have deactivated some
of them. At delivery of GSI 66 125, 750 and 1500 Hz are deactivated.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The GSI 66-67-68 system is comprised by the following identifiable parts:

• main audiometer unit

• patient response switch
• air conducting transducer , Telephonics TDH 39 or EAR-TONE 3A
• bone conductor (not GSI 66) , Radio ear B71
• optional printer
• optional free field system (not GSI 66)

The GSI 68 is also comprised by the following identifiable parts:

• optional CD or tape player
• optional Talkback microphone
• optional Live Speech Monitor Headset

All above parts but the printer connects to the main unit with standard ¼” jack connectors.
The printer is connected to the main unit with a 9 pole D-SUB connector. On the GSI 68 the
CD/Tape player connects with RCA plugs.

The Main board can be divided into three categories (see block diagram 1):
1. Power supply
2. Analogue part
3. Digital part.

The power supply has separate outputs for the digital and analogue parts.
The analogue part consists of all circuits that have to do with the sound generation and distribution.
The digital part consists of the ”brain” of the system, the CPU, an EPROM containing the program,
an EEPROM containing calibration data, a non-volatile RAM with built-in real-time clock, interface
to the analogue circuits and the operator input/output devices.

If the board or any components are replaced in the Analogue section a thorough calibration check
should be performed.

Page 67 (85)
GSI 66-67-68 Technical manual

DIGITAL PART

The digital part consists of the CPU a Siemens 80C535, an EPROM 27C512 (64Kx8), an EEPROM
(1024 x 8) and a non-volatile RAM (32Kx8) with built-in real-time clock and lithium battery.

The RAM is not only used as the normal scratch data memory for the CPU, but also contains stored
test results.

The EPROM contains information of the software version, shown on the LCD at power up.

The EEPROM contains all calibration data.

The 80C535 is an 8051 compatible CPU, but with more I/O pins and built-in A/D converter. It uses
multiplexed address/data bus and to de-multiplex the low order address bits (A0..A7) the
demultiplexer IC5 is used.

The clock frequency is set to 3.686 MHz by the crystal CY1 that is connected directly to the CPU.

The reset of the CPU is performed by IC3, a dedicated reset IC, MAX709L.

All five I/O ports on the CPU are used and in addition there are some memory mapped I/O. The
memory mapped I/O consists of the LCD display, a counter timer IC9 and an auxiliary output port
IC6.
Address decoding for the memory mapped I/O is performed by IC10.

Operator interface

The operator interacts with the audiometer with the aid of the LCD, three dials (two in GSI 66) and
a keypad.

The dials are Gray coded digital encoders that interfaces to the CPU I/O via buffers IC2, R1 and the
capacitors connected to the A and B channels of the encoders.
The RC filters formed by R1 and associated capacitor, deglitches the signal.
The software does additional deglitching.

The interface logic internal to the LCD is fast enough to be connected directly to the data bus.

The resistor divider R5/R7 sets the LCD contrast.

The LCD contains a backlighted type LED.

All keys SW1 through SW12 on the audiometer are connected in matrix form. The matrix is not
scanned in continuous manner, but instead an interrupt is generated when one of the keys is
depressed and then the scan is started.

ANALOGUE PART

Sinus generation

Pure tone generation in this audiometer is based on a crystal accurate master clock. This means that
there is no need to calibrate pure tone centre-frequencies.

The principle used, is that if a square-wave is sufficiently low-pass filtered, only the fundamental
frequency will remain on the filtered output and all harmonics will be gone.

The 6 MHz master clock for the sound generation is located in crystal module IC30. This master
clock is divided under computer control by counter/timer IC9. The output of IC9 is further divided
by IC14 (DIV 50) to produce the square-wave signal input to the main low-pass filter IC26 (MF6).
This IC is a 6th order switched capacitor Butterworth low-pass filter with clock tuneable cut-off
frequency.
The output from IC9 is taken to the clock input of the filter and consequently the computer can
control the cut-off frequency.

The MF6 filter has two internal uncommitted OP amps. One of these OP amps is used as an anti-
ailising low-pass pre-filter and the other as a low-pass post-filter.

As the post filter is set to a fixed 8 kHz cut-off, it will not remove the clock-leakage noise in the
band of interest. The output from the post-filter is therefore connected via a buffer to a bank of
three filters around IC24. The three filter outputs are taken to an analogue multiplexer, IC23 that,
depending of the chosen frequency, selects one of the filter outputs.

Noise generation (not GSI 66)

The source of masking noise is a digital pseudo-random noise generator IC12 (MM5437). The
output of this IC is a train of random digital pulses.

The low-pass filter around IC13 smoothes the noise. The output of the filter is connected to a clock
tuneable 4th-order switched capacitor band-pass filter IC 17 (MF8). The centre frequency off this
filter is set to track the pure-tone frequency by connecting it to the same clock-source as the pure-
tone filter.
In the same manner and for the same reason, two low-pass post-filters around IC22 follow the
band-pass filter. One of the filter outputs is selected by analogue MUX IC21 to form the masking
noise source.

Microphone

The signal from the built-in talk forward electret microphone is amplified by 43 dB with the aid of
OP amp IC1 (TL071).

Source selectors

One of the three signal sources (Sine, Noise or Mic.) can be routed to attenuator IC 15 or
attenuator IC 16 with analogue multiplexers IC 18 and IC19 (4051).

The two inputs from connector K7 labelled SPEECH_1 and SPEECH_2 are in the GSI 68 inputs from
the speech card.

Page 69 (85)
GSI 66-67-68 Technical manual

Attenuators

The function of the attenuator is to attenuate its input-signal to give an output-level in the
transducer corresponding to the value set by the operator.
To do this, the calibration value for the transducer in use will have to be added to the desired
attenuation-level. This also means that the output from the attenuator will change with frequency
while the shown level remains fixed.
One can say that the usual calibration potentiometers have been included in the attenuator circuits.
This could be done because the total attenuation range is large enough to cope with the spread of
sensitivity of the transducers.

The output signals from each source selector are routed to two identical attenuator circuits around
IC15, 16 (CS3310). Only IC16 in GSI 66)

The CS3310 is a digital volume control with a 95.5 dB attenuation range and a step size of 0.5 dB. It
contains two independent channels (L/R). The attenuation is shared between channels L and R by
the software to give the best signal to noise ratio.
The two channels in each attenuator are connected in series, and this gives a theoretical total
attenuation of 191 dB.

The attenuator can also be hardware muted by a logical low on its MUTE input. This disconnects
the internal output buffer-amplifiers and terminates the output pins with 10k resistors to ground.

The CS3310 IC is controlled by a three-pin serial data interface from the CPU I/O (CS^, SDATAI,
SCLK). The output level of each channel in the IC is programmed by sending a 16-bit word on the
line LEVEL (SDATAI).
There will be one clock pulse on LEVEL CL for each transmitted data bit.
After all bits are sent, the word is latched by setting LOAD high.

IC15 and IC16 have the serial interface daisy-chained with IC15. SDATO to IC16. SDATAI, so to
program both channels a 32-bit word is sent.

To verify the function of an attenuator, exercise the corresponding output level control and look for
correct pulses at the serial interface. Also look at the signal carrying pins AINL, AUOTR and AOUTL
to verify a correct undistorted signal.

Three separate pins power CS3310, the analogue supply VA+, VA- and the digital supply VD+.
Note that the digital supply pin connects to the analogue supply via resistors R15/R16. This
connection is important because it determines the order in which the voltages will be applied at
power up.

The CS3310 can be destroyed if VD+ is missing or R15/R16 is shorted.

Interrupter

There are two identical interrupters, one for Sine and one for Noise (not GSI 66). Each consists of
two Analogue opto-couplers (MCD 5218) controlled by an integrator built around IC 25.

Page 70 (85)

Power amplifier

There are two identical Power amplifiers, one for Sine and one for Noise, each consisting of an OP
amplifier and two power transistors. In GSI 66 one of to OP is not mounted (IC20)
There are two versions, one older version with BC 140 / BC 160 and one newer version with BD 679
/ BD 680.

Output circuits

The output from each power amplifier goes through two separate 20 dB attenuators consisting of a
resistor and a relay.
The Sine output is routed to either AIR or Bone via relay REL 4. The AIR signal goes through the
Left / Right relay REL 5 and then finally through REL 6, which is selecting Free Field or TDH 39
headset to the corresponding jacks. The coils L3 – L7 with capacitors C106 – C110 and transient
voltage suppressers D23 – D27 forms the EME filters. Those filters ensure that RF signals will not
enter the transducer cables that otherwise works as very good antennas. The Ferrite beads also
works as ESD protection.

The relay REL 1 is the ”test completed” relay. This relay will close for approximately 5 seconds on
completion of an automatic test sequence.

The computer controls all relays via the transistor array IC 7.

POWER MODULE

Power supply

The power supply on the Main board connects through connector K1 to a toroidal transformer
bolted inside the case and has five DC voltage outputs.
Four of these are used mainly by the analogue parts of the circuit and the fifth of the digital parts.

Note that although analogue and digital grounds are shown as separate symbols these separate
grounds are interconnected at one point near K1.

The power supply is built by standard 78XX / 79XX regulators, the only unusual about it, is that the
+12V / -12V outputs feeds the inputs of the analogue supply +5V / -5V regulators.

TRANSFER STORED DATA TO A COMPUTER

General
Overview The stored audiograms can easily be transferred to a computer for
storage and calculations.
The computer must have special software that can handle the transfer.
Most commercially available database programs can easily be
adapted. Consult your software dealer for more information or
assistance.

Advanced Each examination is sent as an ASCII string, a Carriage Return and a

Line Feed (CR+LF).
If more than one examination is stored, each examination is on a
separate row.
After the last sent row, an End Off File (EOF) is sent.

A batch of examination strings looks like this:

EXAMINATION NUMBER 1 CR+LF

EXAMINATION NUMBER 2 CR+LF
.
.
EXAMINATION NUMBER N CR+LF
EOF

Each parameter always has the same position in the string.

9600 BAUD
8 bit
No parity
Hardware handshake CTS/RTS

Start the transfer from The GSI 66-67-68 will start to send the data when one of the following
the computer. commands is sent from the computer to the GSI 66-67-68:
