THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD MODULE 1

Overview of GEC 13- The Contemporary World


This module is designed for you to get acquainted with the VMGO
of Bicol University as well as the important details of the course you
are enrolled in. An overview of the course coverage, methods of
instructional delivery as well as the course requirements are
explained in detail in the Course syllabus and Course Guide which
comes with this module.

Objectives:

At the end of the module, you are expected to:

1. Create a concept map on globalizations; and


2. Reflect on the development of character, leadership, service
and scholarship as a student of Bicol University

LESSON 1
I. Get to know each other virtually:
• Get connected with your professor
and classmates through different social media
platforms such as Facebook and Messenger. In
that manner, you will be added in the Group chat, get verified, and
invited to the Google classroom.
• The Google classroom has already been prepared before
the start of classes. Once you receive the invitation, accept it and
get yourself oriented with the platform.
• Introduce yourself. Your Professor had already welcomed
you and introduced herself. It is your turn to introduce yourself. Say
something about your basic personal background, reason for taking

the course, your strength and weakness, expectations, and feeling
towards the New Normal in education.
• Survey says: Be able to post your answer on the survey
question about your internet connectivity. Be honest with your
answer because it will serve as the basis for designing the most
practicable set-up for our learning set-up.

SURVEY QUESTION:

What is the status of your internet connection?

A. Strong and Consistent- Meaning you have more than 10 mbps


internet speed (usually Fiber plan, unlimited data plan ), you can
connect to the internet anytime without any downtime. Uninterrupted
signal during Zoom, Google meet and other real time teleconferencing

B. Moderate / Irregular Connectivity- Usually less than 10 mbps


internet speed, wifi or broadband connections. This can also include
those who who are able to connect through prepaid load or data in
their gadgets and devices.

C. Without Internet Access, mobile devices and other related


resources at home.

II. Get to Know the Course

The Course Syllabus and Course Guide is attached with this


module. If you are using the Google classroom, they have also been
uploaded. Make sure you read and take note of the important
details about the subject. Course policies are also discussed in detail
so make sure to follow them.

This course introduces students to the contemporary world by


examining the multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the

various disciplines of the social sciences, it examines the economic,
social, political, technological, and other transformations that have
created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of
peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the course
provides an overview of the various debates in global governance,
development, and sustainability. Beyond exposing the student to the
world outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global
citizenship and global ethical responsibility.

LEARNING with the use of the
Google Classroom.
SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE
CLASSES shall be announced
in advance so that all students
can prepare especially with
their internet loads.

Flexible and
asynchronous online learning
means that there is no need
for all of you to be online at
exactly the time of your class
schedule. I will upload the
lesson (module) for the whole
week in the Google classroom
and you can download it at the time where internet connection is
most favorable. Read and follow the instructions even if you are
offline. You can already prepare all your output and ready them for
submission on or before the due date. In that manner, you can save
stress, time and money due to poor internet connection. In case you
have questions, you can consult me either in the comment section of
the Google classroom or in the group chat, or even in through a
private message. The deadline is usually set at the end of the week so
you have a lot of time to submit compared to the usual face to face
setting where assignments are submitted a day after the meeting and
at a very strict time limit. So if you MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL, you will

realize the new normal is even more favorable. It is a matter of
adjusting and being open to change.

The Google classroom IS A LOW DATA USAGE APPLICATION


where we can store all the announcements, discussions and
comments, as well as the lessons (module and reference materials,
including PDF copies and even scanned reference materials, internet
links).I will provide you the reference materials already. You can
access it ANYTIME so that you do not get stressed when your internet
connection is slow at a particular time. Everything will be recorded
there. You can submit all your output there and it will be safely
recorded. It is safe for you because as long as you are able to submit
it, it will be recorded. It will not be easily erased. It will be safe for you
because if properly submitted, it will not be easily lost or denied.
Compared to sending your work through private message, email or
manual (printed copy/ hard copy / courier) they may get lost or
misplaced. But if you do it in the Google classroom, it will be
safeguarded. Even the time of submission is recorded. That is how
organized the Google classroom is.

Let’s Get to Work -GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

Think of as many things that characterize


the contemporary world. Organize your
thoughts by making a Concept Map or
Graphic Organizer. You can group together
your thoughts under Main Ideas or Factors.
There is a chance that you will be editing your
work as you further analyze their classification and inter-relation.

Here are examples on how concept maps or graphic


organizers look. Choose or design your own based on what you
are asked to do.

Notice something with your work?

✓ Are the things you listed a reality for everyone?


✓ Do they affect people across all social stratification?
✓ Are those things experienced by countries across the
globe?

Analyze your concept map, what particular word or concept


characterizes what the contemporary world is all about?
Include it in your graphic organizer.

How to Submit the Concept Map?

You may prepare your concept map electronically using offline and
online applications based on your capability. You can submit it in as
a document either in Word, sheets of PDF by attaching it in the
Assignment Section of the Google Classroom. You have to click
attach file and turn in Assignment.

Don’t have much technology? Don’t worry. You may draw your
concept map in a bond paper and take a picture. Just make sure it is
legible and the captured image is clear for upload. You can attach
in your assignment in the Google classroom. You may also send it in
my Messenger when the worst internet connectivity occurs.
