Reflection on Case Study 1

(Vulnerability and Capacity)

Having a disaster preparedness plan should be done in every barangays and cities or in
every community. The importance of having a disaster preparedness plan is very important.
Why is it important? Obviously, the importance of having this is to lessen the harms and
damages that a certain disaster can caused. By being prepared it can reduce our fears, anxiety
and losses that accompany disasters, but it is does not totally reduces our fear it’s just little by
little, because sometimes even though we are that prepared we can’t easily take away those
emotions but if we practiced having this plan maybe we can feel it but probably just a glimpse
of it.
Communities, families and individuals should know what to do during a disaster. If they
need to evacuate even the disaster has not yet come, they evacuate on time, there’s no need
for them to forced to be evacuated because an individual who has a knowledge of the causes
that a disaster could do, would no longer be forced. If there is a disaster local governments
and relief organizations would be their to help, but we as individuals we should be prepared
as well. Just like the Barangay Masigasig they developed a disaster preparedness plan and
they even undergone a training, so basically they are prepared if there is a disaster coming.
Unlike the Barangay Maligalig they rely on barangay officials, that they don’t even bother to
make or conduct their own disaster preparedness plan.

Without having a disaster preparedness plan it will lead to many risks to the community,
to our neighbors, friends or to as individuals. Just like in Barangay Maligalig, they do not
have disaster preparedness plan that could lead to have a very big damage in their barangay or
even to themselves. If there’s a typhoon hit Barangay Masigasig the more damages would be
in Maligalig whereas in Masigasig it was only less damages, they are safe. Since there are just
adjacent barangays the Barangay Maligalig would suffer more. There could have many
people will died, or even injured. In this case we should not depend on the barangay officials
or local governments because some of them they we’re just making promises during election
only few would do their duty and their promises to many people who believe in them. If we
really want to live we should do our part as a human being. You want to survive, you must do
an action because our life does not depend to anyone, it is only you.

But even though we have a plan but it’s not proper it’s still useless. We need to have a
proper planning because if we don’t many Filipinos would suffer from the harsh disasters
coming. Without the goal to have a plan for such disasters, our vulnerabilities will worsen and
our capacities will be ignored.

(Exposure)

Anywhere we go we always meets disaster. The areas who has been exposed to many
disaster to many disaster as the years go by, has been planning so many ways how can they
produce the risks that has been brought by a disaster into their place. The importance of
having a disaster risk reduction during and other emergencies, helps us consider our
emergency response activities in light and existing and new disaster risks. This enables us to
design or adjust our activities so that people and become safer and move disaster resilient.
The disaster risk reduction helps us conduct an effective disaster response while reducing
risks that similar disasters will reoccur. Disaster Risk Reduction aims to reduce the damage
caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods and many more.

In the case of Provinent Village of Marikina City they have plan this over a long time,
but they on;y focus on their villages safety. They should consider their surroundings
especially that they’re just near the meandering belt of Marikina River, wherein if it has a
strong rain that could poured how many millimeters that could cause flood into them that’s
why they just be in their rooftop. That way we can say that our capabilities is nothing if we
don’t have a proper planning. We have the capabilities to provide everything, to fixed things
that are needed to be fixed, but if we don’t have proper planning it’s still useless and it will
just got worsen. They should have noticed that they are just near the river , therefore they also
have to do actions on what to do, what are the things that are needed to fixed there and to be
cleaned. How can we reduce risks before, during and after a disaster? Simply, by being aware,
educated, prepared and ab;e to predict and have warning systems can reduce either small or
big impacts of this natural disasters in our communities.
