Art Forms National Artists
Visual Art  Fernando Amorsolo, who is also known as the Grand Old
Man of Philippine Art. One of his most famous pieces is The
Mestiza (1943).
 Carlos “Botong” Francisco, A muralist who brought the
art form back into the limelight, his work graces the City
Hall of Manila and the National Art Gallery of the
Philippines. The First Mass at Limasawa is one of his
famous piece.
Literature  Amado V. Hernandez, is who practiced “commited art”.
His novel “Mga Ibong Mandaragit”, written by him in
prison, is the first Filipino socio-political novel that exposes
the ills of the society.
 Jose Garcia Villa, one of the finest contemporary poets
regardless of race or language. The first of his poems
“Have Come, Am here” received critical recognition in
New York in 1942 that soon enough honors and fellowships
were heaped on him: Guggenheim, Bollingen, the American
Academy of Arts and Letters Awards.
Music  Antonino R. Buenaventura, vigorously pursued a musical
career that spanned seven decades of unwavering
commitment to advancing the frontiers of Philippine music.
 Ryan Cayabyab, is a Filipino musician, composer and
conductor. He was named as National Artist of the
Philippines for Music in 2018.
Dance  Francisca Reyes-Aquino, considered as the mother of
Filipino folk dance. She was named National Artist in 1973
for her contribution to dance.
 Leonor Orosa-Goquingco, also known as the "Mother of
Philippine Dance Theater" and "Dean of Filipino Performing
Arts Critics”. She started as a ballet dancer and also took
courses in professional and teacher training under some of
the best dance teachers of her time, including National
Artist for Dance Francisca Reyes-Aquino.
Theater  Daisy H. Avellana, is an actor, director and writer. She is
best remembered for her portrayal of Candida Marasigan in
the stage and film versions of Nick Joaquin’s Portrait of
the Artist as Filipino.
 Rolando S. Tinio, is as a stage director whose original
insights into the scripts he handled brought forth
productions notable for their visual impact and intellectual
cogency.
Film  Lamberto V. Avellana, director for theater and film, has the
distinction of being called “The Boy Wonder of Philippine
Movies” as early as 1939. Among the films he directed for
worldwide release were Sergeant Hasan (1967), Destination
Vietnam (1969), and The Evil Within (1970).
 Manuel Conde, invested local cinema with a distinct cultural
history of its own through movies that translated onto the
silver screen the age-old stories that Filipinos had told and
retold from generation to generation for at least the past
one hundred years. Major works: Ibong Adarna (1941), Si
Juan Tamad (1947), Siete Infantes de Lara (1950), Genghis
Khan (1950), Ikaw Kasi! (1955) Juan Tamad Goes To
Congress (1959).
