WEEK 5-6 PROBLEM SET IN MECH 1015

DIRECTION: Solve the following problems. Consolidate your (complete, systematic, neat, and clear) solutions
in one PDF file. Then send it to my email address dbalbin@usl.edu.ph with the subject, "Last Name, First Name
Code ___ Week 5-6 Assessment" on or before October 13, 2021. Box your final answers. DIOS TI AG-NGINA!

1. Determine the tension (Newtons) in cable AB, BC, and CD necessary to support the 15-kg and 10-kg
traffic lights at B and C, respectively. Find also the angle θ (degrees).

2. The beam is pin connected at A and rocker-supported at B. Determine the support reaction (Newtons)
at A and B.

3. The hook is subjected to 3 forces A, B and C as shown. A = 35 kN, B = 45 kN
a. If the resultant of the forces is 90 kN and is acting along the positive x-axis, find the angle α
(degrees) and the force C (kilonewtons).
b. If α = 55°, what is the magnitude of force C (kilonewtons) such that the resultant of forces A, B and
C acts along the x-axis?
c. For the forces A, B and C to be in equilibrium, what is the value of angle α (degrees) and the
magnitude of force C (kilonewtons)?

4. Determine the reaction (Kilonewtons) at the roller A and pin B for equilibrium of the member.

5. The two cylinders cause a sag of s = 1.5 m when suspended from the rings at A and B. Note that s = 0
when the cylinders are removed.
a. What is the stretch (m) in each of the two springs?
b. What is the force (N) in each of the two springs?
c. What is the mass (kg) of each of the two cylinders?

6. From the figure shown, two spheres having equal weights of 360 N each is placed on top of the three
identical spheres. The radius of the upper two spheres is 0.80 m while that at the bottom is 1.0 m
having equal weights of 420 N. Determine the reaction (Newtons) at A, C, and B.
