YEAST NA YEAST!

This activity takes about 60-120 minutes and can be done individually or with a partner.

I. Objectives:
• To explain the different Postulates of Kinetic Molecular Theory.
• To show the real-life application of the Postulates.
• To create a Blow-up Balloon with Yeast.

II. Materials:

• 2 Tablespoons Dry Yeast


• 1 Tablespoon Sugar
• 2-3 Tablespoons Lukewarm Water
• 1 Party Balloon
• Plastic Bottle with a Narrow Neck
• Bowl or Mug Full of Lukewarm Water

III. Task:

1. Measure the yeast, sugar, and warm water into a cup.


2. Stir the ingredients then use a funnel to pour the brown mixture into the bottle.
3. Add a little bit of water to help the yeast mixture get through the neck of the funnel.
4. Quickly stretch the balloon over the mouth of the bottle and secure it.
5. Place the bottle into a mug or bowl full of warm water.
6. Sit back and observe.
7. Document the progress every 10 minutes.
8. Answer the Guide Questions below.

1. What type of gas is present inside the balloon?

2. What made the gas to exist?

3. How much time does it need for the balloon to reach its maximum size?

4. Describe the property/ies of gases the was/were demonstrated in this activity.
