At the end of this unit, the students are expected to:

1. Integrate the principles and concepts of physical, social, natural and health sciences and
humanities in care of clients with potassium imbalances.
2. Apply appropriate nursing concepts and actions holistically and comprehensively based on
a given scenario.
Computer device or smartphone with internet access (at least 54 kbps; average data subscription
will suffice)

To facilitate the practice of students’ web navigation skills, the following rules must be
implemented:

1. The use of search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo) are allowed.

2. Use navigation techniques as mentioned in the required readings.
3. Students must submit this accomplished worksheet through email or Canvas upload.

CASE SCENARIO:

Marco, 65-year-old male, rushed to the Emergency Department of FUMC after complaining difficulty of

breathing and shortness of breath. He is currently diagnosed with Renal Failure and is undergoing

dialysis sessions twice a week. The incident happened after the patient attended a birthday party and

have consumed more than the allowed fluid per day for his condition.

Comprehensive physical assessment of the patient revealed:

• Decreasing level of consciousness

• Labored breathing with increased inspiratory effort

• Distended Neck Veins

• Widespread crackles in both lungs

• Bounding pulses and heart rate of 125 bpm

• Blood pressure of 150/100 mm Hg

• +2 bipedal edema

Battery of tests were ordered, and results are as follows:

• Cranial CT-scan: mild cerebral edema

• Chest X-ray: hazy opacities on both lungs consistent with pulmonary edema
• Blood tests: Serum Creatinine 3 mg/dL, BUN 8 mg/dL, Hematocrit 29%, RBC 3.5 cell/mcL,

Hemoglobin 9 mg/dL, WBC 6000/mcL, Serum Sodium 133 mEq/L, Serum Potassium 5.6 mEq/L.

The doctor ordered furosemide (Lasix) 40 mg TIV STAT after insertion of Foley-catheter. Increased urine

output was observed after the diuretic infusion and the patient was endorsed to the hemodialysis unit for

STAT dialysis. Captopril 6.25 mg tab BID was ordered and a strict fluid restriction and mild sodium

restriction. Neuro-vital signs check every 4 hours, strict input and output monitoring every hour, and daily

weight monitoring were also ordered.

Instructions:
• Create a Visual presentation (PowerPoint) on the given scenario
• One group will be chosen to present during synchronous class via zoom meeting for a maximum
of 30 minutes.
• Submit your PowerPoint presentation through canvas upload in the assignment submission tab
provided.
Guidelines for the Case Presentation
• Based on the given case scenario, Create a visual presentation (Power point) with the following
contents:
o Pathophysiology
o Describe the importance of diagnostic and laboratory test in the given scenario.
o Nursing care plan (2 priority actual diagnoses and 1 potential/risk nursing diagnosis)
o Drug study in the following format (6 columns)
▪ Generic name, brand name, classification, dosage, frequency, and route
▪ Mechanism of action
▪ Indications and drug rationale (why the drug is being given to patient)
▪ Contraindication
▪ Common side effects
▪ Nursing considerations while taking the drug.
o In 1 slide, discuss the importance of monitoring the neuro-vital signs, input and output,
and daily weight of the patient.
o In 1 slide, discuss the appropriate diet for the patient and give examples.
