1.) A construction company has four large bulldozers located at four different garages. The
bulldozers are to be moved to four different construction sites. The distances in miles between the
bulldozers and the construction sites are given below.
Bulldozer \ Site A B C D
1 90 75 75 80
2 35 85 55 65
3 125 95 90 105
4 45 110 95 115
How should the bulldozers be moved to the construction sites in order to minimize the total distance
travelled?
Answer.1)
Step 1) Find the least value in each row and subtract from subsequent values in that row.
Bulldozer \ least
Site A B C D value
1 90 75 75 80 75
2 35 85 55 65 35
3 125 95 90 105 90
4 45 110 95 115 45
Step 2) Find the least value in each column and subtract from subsequent values in that column.
Bulldozer \
Site A B C D
1 15 0 0 5
2 0 50 20 30
3 35 5 0 15
4 0 65 50 70
least value 0 0 0 5
Step 3) Strike out the rows and columns to cover all the zeroes. Start with the row/column that has
maximum number of zeroes. If the number of row/column strike does not equal the total no. of rows
choose the least values that remain untouched and subtract from the values. Add the least value to the cell
which lies in the intersection of two strikes.
Bulldozer \
Site A B C D
1 15 0 0 0
2 0 50 20 25
3 35 5 0 10
4 0 65 50 65
Bulldozer \
Site A B C D
1 35 0 0 0
2 0 30 0 5
3 55 5 0 10
4 0 45 30 45
Step 5) When we get the number of rows equal to the number of columns covering all the zeroes, we now
allot the Bulldozers to the site.
Bulldozer \
Site A B C D
1 40 0 5 0
2 0 25 0 0
3 55 0 0 5
4 0 40 30 40
Bulldozer \
Site A B C D
1 40 0 5 0
2 0 25 0 0
3 55 0 0 5
4 0 40 30 40
Alternatives:
1) A-4 45
B-1 75
C-3 90
D-2 65
sum 275
The above option is how we can allot bulldozers to the site to minimize the distance of travel from garage
to the site.

2.) The following table contains information on the cost to run three jobs on four machines.
Determine an assignment plan that will minimize the cost.
Job \
Machine A B C D
1 12 16 14 10
2 9 8 13 7
3 15 12 9 11
Answer.2)
Step 1) Find the least value in each row and subtract from subsequent values in that row.
Job \
Machine A B C D Min
1 12 16 14 10 10
2 9 8 13 7 7
3 15 12 9 11 9
Step 2) Find the least value in each column and subtract from subsequent values in that column.
Job \
Machine A B C D
1 2 6 4 0
2 2 1 6 0
3 6 3 0 2
Min 2 1 0 0

maximum number of zeroes. If the number of row/column strike does not equal the total no. of rows
choose the least values that remain untouched and subtract from the values. Add the least value to the cell
which lies in the intersection of two strikes.
Job \
Machine A B C D
1 0 5 4 0
2 0 0 6 0
3 4 2 0 2
Step 4) Since the no. of rows is equals to the no. of strikes, now we allot the job to the machine.
Job \
Machine A B C D
1 0 5 4 0
2 0 0 6 0
3 4 2 0 2
1) 1–A 12
2–B 8
3–C 9
Sum 29
2) 1-D 10
2-B 8
3-C 9
sum 27
3) 1-A 12
2-D 7
3-C 9
sum 28
4) 1-D 10
2-A 9
3-C 9
sum 28
But the method is not correct. You are supposed to add a dully row to match the columns. Refer
