Reference
W10M don’t have “Default apps” Section that can be found in W10, but you can still set them manually.
> Open Hamburger Menu in Interop tools and open Default apps section (Applications → Default apps)
> In there you can choose default apps to some well known extension types.
> But what if the Extenion you are looking for isn’t in the list !
In that Case you need to manually define an app for that specific extension in Registry, follow next topic.
> For that first you need to get the “Family Name” of the app you are going to set as the default app.
> Now find and click on the app you need to set as the default app
Note______________________________________________________________________________
There maybe two or three tiles under the same app name, but don’t worry about that, you can
choose any
> In the opened App details windows, click on “Family Name” to automatically copy the family name to
clipboard.
> Now click on the “+” tool in below toolbar to create a new Registry value in that location.
> Here’s an example of setting W10M Group app as the default app for .xap applications.
> Then go see in Interop tools Default apps, the extension you setted earlier should be visible at the last
of the list.
> There you can see/set other apps that can also open that specific extension too.
> Then when you open the App/file with that extension, it will be automatically opened in the app you
choosed, and it will have the App icon as the extensions’s App/file icon in File Explorer.
> Here are some recommded apps to set as default apps for unassigned extensions in W10M.
This is only a few, you can add new extensions or change the below extension’s default apps to an app
you prefer by using the above explained method
> Ofc you need to have these apps already installed in your phone first.
Additional Notes
❖ Like Stated in Requirements in first page, to do these your phone must be Interop Unlocked
❖ You can not set any random app to open any extension, the app simply need to support opening
that kind of file extensions.
❖ After Setting a default app via Registry or via Default apps section in Interop tools, you need to
restart the phone for changes to take effect.
