Miss Rodriguez/4th “WILL” VS. “BE GOING TO”

We use WILL and BE GOING TO to talk about activities in the FUTURE.


I. WILL
• Mr. Laime will become a great graffiti artist.
• Everybody will celebrate Halloween in October.
• I think 4th year students will get into the best universities next year.
• Mr. Cuba won’t come to the next class.
• I have a toothache. I’ll go to the doctor.

USES
1. Things we decide now, at the moment of speaking
- I’m hungry. I will eat a pizza.
- My girlfriend’s calling. I’ll answer now.
2. When we make predictions about the future
- Global Warming will destroy the planet.
- Chris is intelligent. He’ll pass the exam!
- She likes rock. She’ll marry a rocker!
- In 2999, we’ll have robots as servants …in Tacna.
3. When we talk about possibility or probability
* Use WILL after these expressions: - I think, -I expect, -I promise, -I hope, -I’m sure
- I promise I’ll wash up.
- We expect you’ll bathe the dog by tomorrow.
- I’m sure you’ll do this again!
- I think they’ll come back home dirty again tomorrow.
4. When we make an offer, a promise or threat
- I’ll help you with the shopping bags.
- I won’t be late!

II. BE GOING TO (be gonna)


• I am going to be in 5th next year.
• Mr. Boluarte loves clothes. He is going to buy more.
• The students are going to celebrate another school anniversary in October.
• Cristo Rey School is going to have make-up classes in October.
• The Family Day isn’t going to be celebrated in December. It never is.

USES
1. When we have the intention or decision to do something in the future
- We’re going to have a party tomorrow at 9 pm.
- My friends are going to come to my house tomorrow.
- After the party, I’m going to clean the house.
- I’m planning a holiday in November. My girlfriend and I are going to go to Costa Rica.
- We’re going to stay in a luxurious hotel!
- I’m going to take my suntan lotion because it’s really hot there!
- My girlfriend isn’t going to take her cell phone.
- We’re going to go down to the beach everyday.

2. When there are SURE SIGNS that something is going to happen in the future
- The sky is dark. It’s going to rain.
- He didn’t study. He isn’t going to pass the exam.
3. When something is ON THE POINT of happening
- Run!!! The bomb’s going to explode.
- Look out! That woman is going to fall down.

1. It was raining. Sue had no car. Bill said, “ I’ll / I’m going to take you home in my car.”

Then Bill’s girlfriend arrived and asked him to have coffee with her. “I’m busy now”. I’ll / I’m going to take
Jill home. I’ll / I’m going to see you later.

2. - Tim, why are you wearing your best clothes?

- I’ll / I’m going to meet the president.

3. His rich uncle gave Tony $5 million. He thought, “I’ll / I’m going to buy a car!”

Then he read an article about the Bahamas and had a different opinion. He said, “ I’ll / I’m going to use the
money to go on holiday.”

5. David took his football to school. He said, “ I’ll / I’m going to play football in the afternoon.”

At 2p.m. it began to rain. He said, “OK, I’ll / I’m going to play table tennis instead.”

6. A famous singer talked to his fans, “I’m going to / I’ll write a song about a beautiful girl called Jenny.” One fan
said, “Great!. My name is Jenny, I’ll / I’m going to buy the CD as soon as it’s in the shops.”
