International Climate Champions

The International Climate Champions (ICC) project began in 2007. It gives young people of school age a
chance to speak publicly on climate change and to encourage action to reduce its effects. Each country
involved selects three teenagers to be Climate Champions, who take part in local and international activities.

Climate Champion Irene Sanna lives on the Italian island of Sardinia. Irene is interested in solar energy, and
also believes that Sardinia should use the waves around its coast to produce electricity. That would reduce
the need to import oil and gas for lighting, heating and cooking. “Energy conservation is our future. We must
make plans to save our coast, which still has no pollution. We must protect the animals, birds and fish in
danger from global warming. And we must recycle.'

Chinese student Ding Yinghan is the Beijing Climate Champion. Ding feels it is unfair to say that just one
country-his own-is causing climate change. He says the air pollution that leads to global warming comes from
many parts of the world, including poorer countries that are now growing more quickly. He believes the only
way to prevent the situation getting even worse is for rich and poor countries to work together.

Sophia Angelis, a junior student in Lake Arrowhead, California, is a US Champion. She's against young people's
general lack of interest in politics and feels they need to discuss the problems that really matter to their
generation. She has written about the need for action on world poverty and her articles have been published
in her local newspaper. Sophia strongly believes that climate change is an important issue for her generation.
For her, changes in the way teenagers behave are an important way of influencing choices that are made by
parents.

In 2008, the Climate Champions attended the International Conference of Environment Ministers in the
Japanese city of Kobe. At present, 13 countries are involved in the ICC, and more countries are expected to
join soon.

5. Read the following text and answer the questions. (10 pts)

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE FOR YOU LATELY?

If you think science doesn't matter much to you, think again. Science affects us all, every day of the year, from the
moment we wake up, all day long, and through the night. Your digital alarm clock, the weather report, the bus you
get on, your decision to eat a baked potato instead of fries, your cell phone, the antibiotics that treat your sore
throat, the clean water that comes from your faucet, and the light that you turn off at the end of the day have all
been brought to you courtesy of science. The modern world would not be modern at all without the understandings
and technology enabled by science.
No way to use electricity. From Ben Franklin's studies of static and lightning in the 1700s, to Alessandro Volta's first
battery, to the key discovery of the relationship between electricity and magnetism, science has steadily built up our
understanding of electricity, which today carries our voices over telephone lines, brings entertainment to our
televisions, and keeps the lights on.
No modern agriculture. Science has transformed the way we eat today. In the 1940s, biologists began developing
high-yield varieties of corn, wheat, and rice, which, when paired with new fertilizers and pesticides developed by
chemists, dramatically increased the amount of food that could be harvested from a single field, ushering in the
Green Revolution. These science-based technologies triggered striking changes in agriculture, massively increasing the
amount of food available to feed the world and simultaneously transforming the economic structure of agricultural
practices.
No modern medicine. In the late 1700s, Edward Jenner first convincingly showed that vaccination worked. In the
1800s, scientists and doctors established the theory that many diseases are caused by germs. And in the 1920s, a
biologist discovered the first antibiotic. From the eradication of smallpox, to the prevention of nutritional deficiencies,
to successful treatments for once deadly infections, the impact of modern medicine on global health has been
powerful. In fact, without science, many people alive today would have instead died of diseases that are now easily
treated.
Scientific knowledge can improve the quality of life at many different levels — from the routine workings of our
everyday lives to global issues. Science informs public policy and personal decisions on energy, conservation,
agriculture, health, transportation, communication, defense, economics, leisure, and exploration. It's almost
impossible to overstate how many aspects of modern life are impacted by scientific knowledge.
Now answer:
20. What changes have there been in science recently?
21. How has agriculture transformed?
22. What has medicine given to humanity?
23. What ways has electricity been used for?
24. What has science done for you lately?
