SSE 201- INTEGRATIVE METHODS IN TEACHING SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINE IN BASIC EDUCATION

ACTIVITY #5

1. Explain teaching models.

Ans: Teaching Models are larger than a particular strategy method, or tactic. These are broad overall
approaches to instruction that do not only help teachers in planning instruction, but also guide them in
acquiring information, developing skills, internalizing values, and engaging in other forms of learning
activities.

2. What are the different types of teaching models? Explain each.

Ans: The different types of teaching models are Discovery Learning, Inquiry Learning, Problem-Based
Learning, Cooperative Learning, Decision-making, and ACES Teaching Approach.

• Discovery Learning - This teaching model is based on the idea that content is not given to learners in
learners in finished form.

• Inquiry Learning - This is commonly known as the inquiry process which is apparently the application
of scientific method to teaching.

• Problem-based Learning (PBL) - The essence of this model consists of presenting students authentic
and meaningful problem situations to serve as springboards for investigation.

• Cooperative Learning - This is the procedure whereby learners work together in small groups and are
rewarded for their collective accomplishments. The key characteristics or attributes of cooperative
learning are the ways the groups or teams are made up.

• Decision-making - This is an intellectual process that requires students to select the best alternative
choice on a set of conditions or circumstances.

• ACES Teaching Approach - The ACES teaching (Four As) follows a logical Approach sequencing of
learning activities from the mood-setting activity to the closing activity. (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction,
Application)

3. Differentiate Discovery learning and Inquiry learning.

Ans: Discovery learning are inquiry-based, problem centered constructivist learning approach. The major
goals of discovery learning can be addressed through inquiry and problem solving. Inquiry is the process
of posing, investigating, and answering questions. Problem-solving is the process we employ when
facing a problem, an uncertainty, or difficulty, while Inquiry learning are students actively construct
meaning. The process skills transcend any specific subject. Though there is a pattern for Dewey's inquiry
method, it is a broad, flexible set of investigative strategies. Sometimes students follow a sequence,
sometimes they mix up the order, and sometimes they ignore the steps altogether, just as practicing
social scientists do.

4. What are the different instructional strategies/presentation techniques? Explain each.

Ans: The different instructional strategies/presentation techniques are the following:

• Lectures are used when introducing a topic, defining an issue, presenting a dilemma, explaining a
process, and in summarizing key points.

• A roundtable discussion usually involves a small number of students, perhaps no fewer than 3 and no
mote than 8.

• A panel discussion is similar to roundtable discussion in many aspects, but there are some differences.

• A brainstorming technique is often used by teacher in analysing an issue, an event or problem that
calls for a solution.

• A role playing technique helps students understand the perspective of others.

• Socio-drama strategy used in summarizing highlights of learning experience through pantomime,


skits, and dramatization.

5. Design/ Illustrate/ Draw different types graphic organizers by giving examples.
