- Explain the definition of Sparring in Martial
Arts in General.
- Know the importance and purpose of sparring
in Arnis.
- Give details about the different types of
sparring
- Discuss other forms of Arnis Competitions.
What is Sparring?
Sparring - is a form of training common to many combat sports. Although
the precise form varies, it is essentially relatively 'free-form' fighting, with
enough rules, customs, or agreements to minimize injuries.
Purpose of Sparring

The purpose of the sparring is to


hit or score a clean touch on an
opponent, without being hit. In
general, a player maintains a
safe distance from the opponent
until one attempts and decides
to attack. The attack may be
blocked or evaded by a player
on th defense who may then
attempt to counter attack.
Types of Sparring Largo (Stop & Go Sparring)

A type of sparring designed for


juniors and neophyte fighters in
which both players are trying to out
maneuver each other by
accumulation of scores t win a non
non-continuous type of sparring.
The referee will stop the bout when
judges indicate the score through
flag gestures, awarding the score
and restarting the bout. This can be
played one or two sticks.
Olisi (Continuous Sparring)
A type of Sparring in which
both players are trying to
outclash each other by
winning the best of three
rounds during a specified
period thru accumulation
of scores. The “double
stick game’ is optional.
Taming (Shielded Sparring)
This type of sparring
wherein both players
use round and
light-weight shields.
The Olisi or Largo
pattern of bout can be
applied.
Other forms of Arnis Competition

Laban
a pre-arranged
fighting sequence
competition wherein
two players depicting
a duel and uses their
arnis skills as an art
form.
Sayaw

Traditional Warrior
Dance Form Competition
-a dance form
competition either as
an individual or team
event. The players
perform a musical and
choreographed Arnis
movements.
Terminology in Arnis
Anyo-- a pre-arranged sequence of defensive and offensive.
Arnis movements used for training and ranking purposes;
also forma, porma.
Baluti- Armour, Protective Gears.
Doble Baston- play of Arnis using two sticks, also Sinawali
Duwelo- fighting, sparring bout.
Hurado- panel of judges (Tagahatol).
Kalas- disarming of Arnis during a bout.
Laban- competition event of choreographed or pre-arranged
fighting sequence using Arnis skills.
Terminology in Arnis
Laglag- accidental dropping of stick during bout.
Largo- type o sparring designed for juniors and neophyte
practitioners; means long range.
Manlalaro--Arnis players.
Moro-Moro- a popular and spectacular stage play during the
Spanish era. The play was concerned with the wars between
Christian and Muslim complicated by the love Christian or
Muslim prince for a Muslim or Christian princess.
Solo Baston- play of Arnis using one stick.
Taliba- referee; old tagalog word for messenger or leader.
Taming- a round shaped shield, usually made of woven rattan.
